4.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful mezzo-soprano
We are very fortunate that at the moment there is an embarasse de richesse of mezzos singing the baroque repertoire and amongst the finest in the world is, without doubt, Sarah Connolly. 1.0 out of 5 stars This has got to stop!
How on earth Sarah Connolly came to regard herself and even be regarded by others as having a voice even remotely suitable to sing baroque repertoire is completely beyond me. I've rarely heard poor old Handel subjected to such a wide and almost continuous vibrato, ladelled willy-nilly on top of such an inappropriately lush, full, big-chested voice. Twenty years ago, such...

We are very fortunate that at the moment there is an embarasse de richesse of mezzos singing the baroque repertoire and amongst the finest in the world is, without doubt, Sarah Connolly. Not only has Sarah Connolly an exceptionally fine voice, larger than many, but she is also a marvelous interpreter both musically and dramatically as anyone who has seen her at ENO will attest. This CD is a calling card to all the major opera companies and recording labels - get her now, the voice has a wonderful bloom! So, why only 4 stars and not 5? Well, the let down is Harry Christophers and The Sixteen. The strings are often rough, and the extraordinary dynamics and subtle changes that Minkowski, McGegan, Christie are able to produce on my full recordings of Alcina, Ariodante and Hercules make Christophers and his band sound very ordinary - just listen to the intro to Scherza infida on Minkowski's (with Anne-Sophie von Otter) compared with Christophers, the bassoons are amazing. But the purpose of the CD is to display the wonderful talents of Connolly and this it does admirably in a very well chosen programme.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Handel highlights disk, 14 Jan. 2009

This review is from: Heroes and Heroines (Audio CD)
There has been a flood of recordings of highlights from Handel operas and oratorios recently, but for me this the best. Sarah Connolly is in her prime as anyone who has had the privilege of hearing her in Guilio Cesare and Agrippina in recent years will testify. I have been a fan of Handel operas since the days of the Handel Opera Society, and my collection is mainly of complete operas, but I bought this CD just to be able to hear this wonderful voice on tap, the Doppo Notte is so exhilarating!

I chose this rating because I love everything about the CD. Sarah's voice and interpretation is sublime. And I would recommend this to anyone who is a lover of Handel or just wanting to get to know this music.
Thank You to Sarah Connolly, Harry Christohers, Symphony of Harmony and Invention and all those involved in the recording.

I wanted to listen to something that was quiet and calming at work while all else around me was eroding my concentration. I'll not profess to be experienced on the works of Handel but I found this compendium of tracks just superb. I would recomend this for anyone writing a dissertation or similar.

1.0 out of 5 stars This has got to stop!, 3 Mar. 2015
This review is from: Heroes and Heroines (Audio CD)
How on earth Sarah Connolly came to regard herself and even be regarded by others as having a voice even remotely suitable to sing baroque repertoire is completely beyond me. I've rarely heard poor old Handel subjected to such a wide and almost continuous vibrato, ladelled willy-nilly on top of such an inappropriately lush, full, big-chested voice. Twenty years ago, such a treatment of C17th/C18th music would have been laughed out of court by serious lovers of this period's music. But then the Decca/DG industry and the classical music establishment always hated it when Emma Kirkby was carrying all before her with her transcendently pure, clear tone. Just wasn't Tosca enough for them, and that's where the money is and where vocal training is invested. Kirkby and the other greats of her generation (Tubb, Figueras, Bott, Kiehr - too many great ones to name) always sang (and most still are singing) with GENUINE emotion, not this "look-at-me-mummy-I'm-a-real-opera-singer" emoting. Handel's favourite singer, his go-to choice when she was available? Susannah Cibber, described as having a "mere thread of a voice". What did he like about her? The way her performances brought out the TRUE deep feeling, drama and emotion of his arias. Sarah Connolly just can't deliver that.
