A fine tribute, by an even finer singer
on 8 March 2001
This is an album that many fans of Coughlan have been waiting for. It's obvious from past efforts and certainly from this album that Mary has a lot of respect for Billie Holiday, and her treatment of all the songs on this album is exemplary. Combining the magic of a live Mary Coughlan performance with the moody songs of Holiday, the album provides a fitting tribute to the songs of Billie Holiday by one of the worlds greatest and original voices in music. Coughlan is backed by a fantastic jazz band which provides a more than adequate sound of the era of the songs, and gives a wonderful backdrop to Mary's sensual voice. What a pity the show, in which Mary played the part of Billie Holiday, which gave rise to this recording never made it over to the UK.
