This review is from: Kino's Journey Vol.1 [2003] [DVD] (DVD)
Have just finished watching the final episode of Kino's Journey. Well, it's not excatly a final episode, per se, as nothing is resolved, except we find out a few extra titbits of information about the main character. This is what the series is all about: coming to terms with the human condition. Each episode tracks like a fable, and as we accompany Kino and her mechanical companion (not nearly as "teens'n'machines" as you'd think!) through various enlightening adventures, we are, as she is, confronted by countless unanswerable conundrums. The basic premise is about finding beauty in unexpected places, and that is exactly what Kino does - even if she has to constantly adjust her idea of what that beauty is. Kino is a wonderful, rounded, beautiful character herself; dry, witty, and extremely kind and humble, and although she aquits herself more than ably when called upon to fight, this is certainly not an action series. Through her conversations with Hermes, who has a more simplistic view of the world, she begins to understand her place within it. All in all, a wonderful series; simply animated and drawn and all the more powerful for it.
