2.0 out of 5 stars Anzio dvd
Typical gung ho rubbish American film showing its' age. the characters and events portrayed are barely recognisable from actual events and personalities. In particular Peter Falk and Robert Mitchum. Falk didn't want the role originally and wrote his own script - that says it all.

does a great disservice to Darbys Rangers, very brave soldiers indeed, and also...

5.0 out of 5 stars Anzio, 30 Mar 2003
This review is from: Anzio [VHS] [1969] (VHS Tape)
Robert Mitchum stars as an American news correspondent, covering the landing at Anzio, in 1944. Waiting for the troops, the Germans are dug in, with heavily fortified defenses. Follow a band of men, stranded behind enemy lines, fighting desperatley to warn the troops landing about the hidden German trap.
This film shows scenes of glorious heroism and hideous carnage, proving Anzio to be one of the most decisive and fierce campaigns of World War 2.
This powerful and electrifying war drama is guaranteed thrills a minute entertainment.
One of my favourite films of my collection.
Not exactly a Saving Private Ryan, but if you like War Classics, this one is for you.

does a great disservice to Darbys Rangers, very brave soldiers indeed, and also laughable how Mitchum wins the war by himself!

you almost have to watch it to see how bad it can be.....

It seems unfair to dismiss this film with a few words of skill and prolific Dmytryk (along with Colette), whose theme is an important historical event in the military campaign in Italy between the end of '43 and the liberation of Rome and so many young lives cost to both sides. How much of what is told in the film history and what is fantasy? In fact, the film speaks of the few survivors of the battalions of rangers, sent to take Cisterna.
The over-cautious initial cost dearly. The Germans could hardly drive out the allies at sea, and only after 4 ½ months of grueling fight the Allies managed to break through and arrive in Rome (just 50 km). The director describes the discharge as occurred and, with the eyes of a war correspondent, he mentions that, immediately after landing, you could get to Rome (this part is too fanciful: how could a jeep covering 50km without being seen and enter a city completely empty). Instead, well described the destruction of two battalions of Rangers. Certainly exceed the espionage activities by the 6 survivors who had already their fish to fry, to return to the bridgehead. But the substance of the story is true and who does not experience a surge of pity for so many young lives cut short in the struggle for liberation from Nazi-fascism, does not deserve respect. The film is thus the story of an act of war actually happened and the possibility of preventing many deaths if the command had been more suitable. I confess that when I saw the endless rows of white crosses in the cemetery of war Neptune had a lump of emotion. Overall the film is enriched by a beautiful photograph of Rotunno and supported by appropriate music Ortolani, although with some excess, flows and attentive despite the gender war content. Good and credible performance of the actors

4.0 out of 5 stars A good way to spend two hours., 29 Jun 2007
This review is from: Anzio [DVD] [1969] (DVD)
Anzio is a good attempt to explain the mistakes which made this forgotten battle so bloody. Although by no means a classic it is enjoyable and does contain a few quite memorable lines especially towards the end. Robert Mitchum essentiallly plays a similar character to many in his other films but this is by no means a criticism. All in all a good way to spend an afternoon.

I HAVE READ OTHER DEROGATORY 'reviews' of this film so this one is the other side of the coin. I have watched this film a number of times since it was first released and always enjoyed it. I took the opportunity to read up on the Anzio 'mistakes' and now believe the movie tries very hard to give an authentic reasoned slant to what happened. ROBERT MITCHUM - well anyone who decries his acting ability must be an saddle pate. IT IS a good film so take the time to watch it in concentration.

The movie itself is a bit disappointing. The plot is not well developped and the tanks they are using are models from after the war
