5.0 out of 5 stars A good old fashioned Punch Up!
The Rock plays Chris Vaughn a retired US Special Forces Soldier who has returned home to set up a new life for himself. Yet when he returns home he finds the place he left behind is now a dilapidated crime riddled shell with his old school friend, Hamilton now running the show. Together with a mate (Johnny Knoxville), Chris Vaughn decides to take a stand against the...

3.0 out of 5 stars Throwaway stuff
A competent if uninspired remake sees Dwayne Johnson clean up the criminal element that has taken hold of his old town. The fight scenes are well choreographed but the Rock faces similar problems to Arnie in that unless he's fighting five guys, he doesn't appear to be in much trouble. His saving grace is that he can act a fair bit, certainly moreso than other musclebound...

Look if you want Thespians then you go for a Branagh film,if you want a punch up with lots of action then you go for a film like this.It was fast paced, had lots of action and not overlong. The love angle did seem as if it was was thrown in as a necessary afterthought, but hey who cares?,it's a film that is inexpensive and passes along quite nicely,it's a bit like the type of first film you used to get in a double feature at the cinema, showing my age there aren't I?.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Buford Pusser story gets a Rock make over., 21 Feb 2011

Since old age and politics sent the last wave of action heroes to the memory bank, tho Stallone manfully keeps trying to resurrect a comeback each year, there's been a massive hole left to be filled. Where once was Sly, Bruce and Arnie, now sits The Rock, Jason Statham and Vin Diesel. Now those are some pretty large shoes to be filled, for however much the action hero is frowned upon by the non popcorn crowd, they are part of a cinematic niche that thrills millions of movie goers. However, if one is to like Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's remake of Phil Karlson's 1973 Sheriff Buford Pusser based picture, Walking Tall, then you really have to take it on its very basic action beefcake form.

That the film is distinctly average is not Johnson's fault, he remains (long after this was released) a very likable and watchable star; and with Gridiron Gang he more than proved he had some acting chops to go with his considerably large frame. This film, directed by music video director Kevin Bray, just feels like an excuse to cash in on Johnson's wrestling popularity; two years after The Scorpion King had already done the same thing! The action is well put together, especially during a great police station shoot out, and the humour that is in here, works rather well. But the problems are many, not least the old familiarity breeds contempt train of thought with the plot. Think town tamer Western meets ex soldier fighting back against the bullies, and you have Walking Tall nicely packaged into one popcorn flavoured pie. Then there's the awful performances of love interest Ashley Scott and head villain Neal McDonough, so bad you wonder if the makers had spent all the budget by the time it come to the support cast decisions.

As an action movie fan myself, yes in its primal form, I still found enough to have me cheering The Rock on as he went all Rambo on their buttocks. But if you are the sort of film watcher who hated the likes of Cobra, Raw Deal and Striking Distance? Then you probably should avoid this like the plague. 5/10

3.0 out of 5 stars Not at all bad - a nice surprise, 3 Sep 2010
This review is from: Walking Tall [DVD] (DVD)
I was a little hesitant at watching this 'inspired' by a true story tale, as although The Rock has a great deal of charm and charisma, it had the potential to be preachy and dull. Instead it's an entertaining tale of a soldier who comes back to his hometown to find it's turned from an honest hardworking place into a corrupt den of sleaze.
As the Rock's ex-soldier tries to adjust to the new atmosphere, it's not long before he runs afoul of casino owner, old childhood friend, and new town head-honcho 'Jay', and things get violently out of hand with beatings, near deaths, and ignorant corrupt law-enforcement.
It's at this point that he decides to take a stand and run for Sherriff, roping in as deputy his slacker ex-addict childhood friend played with comedy (but also a surprising degree of restraint) by Jackass star Johnny Knoxville. The townspeople are sick of their troubles, and so embrace his determination to clean up their home.
The violence escalates far further than I expected, and there are some extremely good action scenes and fights. While the characters are fairly thinly drawn, this is a film all about the actions of the characters involved, not their feelings or motivations, so it suits the style. Ashley Scott plays a nice love interest, but the film is held aloft by The Rock, Knoxville, and bad guys Kevin Durand and Neal McDonough.
The acting is all well played, and the violence is flashy and well handled.
An enjoyable surprise, and satisfying viewing.

Cracking film with some great fight scenes, good story and acting. The Rock does look the part I must say wih a cedar in his hand. Bottom line well worth the money on a Friday night with a four pack and pizza. The only moan is the film is very short.

2.0 out of 5 stars so- so show, 18 Jan 2007

This review is from: Walking Tall [DVD] (DVD)
walking tall is based on the true story of a man who returned to his hometown from being a soldier to find that the twon he knew was drowning in crime and corruption so he became a sherriff to see what he could do about it and this adaptation stars the rock as chris the sherriff and johnny knoxville as the sidekick.

The film is decent enough and although based on real events we have seen this all before, the rock stutters through this with few facial expressions and looks awkward and alightly lost at times, knoxvilles jokes fall flat at times but he does a good enough job and the supporting cast all help and hinder in equal measures.

Walking tall is predictable and mindless and in that is perfectly harmless entertainment, worth a look by all means but this isnt as good as some may have you believe.
