this dvd starts with some awsome big wave footage but from then on it just dosnt live up to this opening sequence. for people who have never seen big wave surfing before im sure this is a great place to start, but for surfers who have watched many surf flicks in those flat summer months this is nothing new. if you are in to a bit of a story about surfing and some pros charging big waves buy this, if you want a good surf movie with technical moves that you can try and copy in your next session dont bother. either way enjoy.

Some ageing big wave surf specialists embark on a mission to find and ride the worlds biggest waves. The talent and courage of these chaps is mind blowing, as is the opening title sequence but, after that, its about as interesting as watching an old spice advert - again and again and again.

I bought this dvd and watch it with a bunch of mates. We all surf and have decided that it awesome!! The camera shots, the waves, the riders are all amazing. From start to finish this is an action packed film showing the biggest waves ridden by a group of surfers. Not only does the film show you them riding the waves it has the whole run up to them getting there. This includes there training(which is nuts), them travelling and the planning. If you are one of those people who like to see stacks as well this film has some of the biggest!! This is a must have for all surfers to add to there collection and even if you don't surf this is still a great flick.
Trust me we spent hours watching it over and over again, everytime you get more and more stoked to watch it again or just get out there.

Seen it all before... Check out the Laird Hamilton video, "Laird". "Billabong Odyssey" appears to be much the same formula (similar script) as "Laird", big-wave tow-in at Jaws, Teahupoo, windsurfing, surfing with hydrofoils... Could they not bring something new to us? The narration in "Billabong Odyssey" is just plain irritating, as though the viewers were pre-pubescent kids receiving a lesson. Some of the surfing is good, though, with the footage from Cortes Bank being the highlight. Indeed, the only thing that sells this film is the opening footage of Cortes. I was contemplating giving 3 stars because of Cortes, but at the end of the day it is about the complete package. Rent it, do not purchase.
Do yourselves a favour, for the same money grab 'Step into Liquid', or the best one of all, 'Riding Giants'.

Over two hours of the most amazing surf footage ever seen, as a group of Billabong riders tavel the world in search of the biggest wave ever ridden. The film reaches its climax at a surf competition at the notorous 'Jaws' spot in Hawaii, with the winner riding a wave which is over 70 feet high! Truly breath-taking.

This is an amazing documentary with some of the best footage of big wave surfing I have ever seen. The surfers' lives and their quest to find and surf big waves, is told in such a way that it inspires and commands respect. The film gives the background to what it takes to work with a partner and to get them into position to ride these monster waves. The photography from the helicopter gives the viewer an unbelievable perspective of these moving mountains of water. If anyone has any doubts about the courage it takes surf big waves, this film will make you salute these incredible sportsmen and women.

This was made by someone who thinks he (or she) is a great film maker and has sold it as such to Billabong on the promise of it being epic, but it falls a long way short. There are some great shots - don't get me wrong - but is not a great DVD for surf fans who KNOW - it is a documentary for someone who doesn't know. And that's where it falls apart. You'll watch it once, and then never again. Really quite disappointing.

Having seen this DVD a few years ago, I wanted a copy for my nephew in Australia who lives to surf. It's not easy to source this DVD but I knew I would find it somewhere on Amazon! Didn't expect to find a new one though, really happy with it..

Thank you
Elly

Wonderful footage and lovely people interviews. I don't even go surfing but enjoyed this immensely - always good to look at wonderful free-spirit people
