5.0 out of 5 stars Underrated classic, 20 Jan 2010
This review is from: Hardcore [DVD] [2005] (DVD)
This is an underrated classic. George C. Scott gives a very powerful and emotional performance as religious Jake VanDorn whose daughter Kristen has gone missing. He soon learns from a private detective that she is starring in porn films. We then follow Jake as he is forced to betray his values and gets caught in a world of pornography and prostitution, as he tries to track down Kristen. This is a solid drama that is entertaining and gripping. Though it seems a little dated now and may not be as shocking as it once was. It is still an intense insight into the desperate underground world of sin. When Jake enlists the help of prostitute Niki (Season Hubley) the relationship between the pair is emotional and touching. As Niki opens naive Jake's eyes to the dark seedy world he knows nothing about. But she is also naive herself in thinking that Jake will take her away from a life of vice. Peter Boyle gives an amazing turn as a sleazy private investigator. And this film for me also has one of the most powerful moments of acting ever. When unsuspecting Jake (who has never seen a porno) is made to sit alone in a dark theatre watching a film of his daughter Kristen performing sex acts. The range of emotions he goes through in such a short space of time is astounding. First you see his confusion then slowly shock. He then becomes so sickened and disgusted by what he is being forced to see. He screams in outrage turn it off, turn it off! It's a scene that is truly brutal. And also a reminder of what an outstanding actor George C. Scott was. If you have seen 8mm I highly recommend you see this.

Ignore the intro ; cheesey country music , sets out of Macmillan and wife and the hair cuts too , yes this is 70s but it becomes a really good film . Worth watching for Scotts ridiculous clothes when he pretends to be in porn rather than a christain father , The end is rather Streets of san fransisco good guys win but it is not a bad movie to watch , if only for the quaint porn/strip/sleeze of how things were in a more "innocent" time .
