5.0 out of 5 stars Crimson Gold: Iran in transition, 20 May 2005
By
N. Wilson "gogleddwr" (Yorkshire, UK of GB and NI) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Crimson Gold [DVD] (DVD)
A beautifully and delicately filmed account of the fractured and brittle society of recent Tehran; a gentle view shown by way of episodes seen through the impassive and ultimately doomed eyes of a pizza delivery man, who has a sideline as a thief. Hossain has clearly been damaged in the front line of the Iran-Iraq war and is bloated by the side effects of cortisone - but he is a sympathetic character. The episodes of his life which we share give a fascinating picture of Tehran and its extremes of wealth and poverty ... tedious if you are not in the mood, but revealing. Hossain ends (as the film begins) as he shoots himself in the course of a mis-conceived jewel theft.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing..., 5 Dec 2006
This review is from: Crimson Gold [DVD] (DVD)
A beautifully shot story about the bindings of social status this film is slow and but captivating. Wonderfully intriguing, Crimson Gold held my interest throughout and even sparked debate between me and my friends afterwards.

A must watch!

4.0 out of 5 stars Sad, but thoughtful, 28 July 2004
By
Stephen Newton (Manchester, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A sad, but thoughtful, film in which the main protagonist struggles in vain to find his place in a complex and contradictory Iran. The bungled heist that both starts and ends the piece makes for a most pathetic cry for help.
