I heard the piece 'Viatore' on Radio 3 recently and was immediately impressed. Buying this cd, however, has truly exceeded my expectations. The Violin Concerto is a superb work - in part a cousin of Arvo Part and at times reminiscent of Shostakovitch - melodic, approachable, haunting, passionate by turn. It's qualities must be clearly apparent - the Concerto was written in 1996/7 for Gidon Kremer and this is already the third commercial recording available. I have listened to other works by Vasks and they are are really rather special. Do try him out!
