Me and My Mate,
By
This review is from: New Boots and Panties (Audio CD)
Taking a stroll down memory lane, me and my mate used to listen to this like mad when we were growing up. We'd play backgammon all night and listen to Blockheads.Happy days and a great soundtrack.

This product is really hard to find in second hand shops, so I was thrilled to be able to get it online at such a reasonable price. It's as gut wrenchingly good as ever.

'Sweet Ian Dury, Young and Old and Gone'!,

What can I say! For all fans of the 'late, great' Ian Dury this two-disc edition is a must, just for the DVD disc alone. The film, from 'Sight & Sound in Concert' was of a far superior quality than I ever expected it to be, and 30 minutes of sheer delight. Seeing Mr Dury at his captivating best, doing what he loved, aided and abetted by The Blockheads.I already own a copy of 'New Boots and Panties' on CD with bonus tracks, but the CD in this edition has two tracks not on that one, 'Close To Home' and 'Two Steep Hills'. So, until we get a DVD with more late 1970s concert footage, and perhaps the inclusion of the videos of the single releases, this two-disc set is a must to own, well worth the money. Note: The only other Ian Dury & The Blockheads DVD of which I am aware of was released in 2003, and entitled 'Hold On To Your Structure', filmed at the London Hammersmith Odeon in 1985, and is just under 60 minutes in length.

Oi, oi!,
This review is from: New Boots and Panties (Audio CD)
Cockney geezer Ian Dury's first album backed by the Blockheads is nothing short of a British institution. It's like a good cuppa, or fish'n'chips - it's part of what being British is all about, or more specifically what being a geezer in London is all about. This is in some ways the most personal of his albums, with a nod to his stage hero ('Sweet Gene Vincent'), and a monologue about his relationship with his long estranged father ('My Old Man') sitting between the irreverent but lyrically genius tracks like 'Billericay Dickie' and 'Clever Trever'. Like most musicians who make social observations, he sticks mostly to his own 'manor'. This is East London/Essex throughout, but very accessible to anyone from anywhere in the UK. The musical talent of Chaz Jankel shouldn't be ignored either, as all the great Ian Dury material involved him as writer/arranger/keyboard player/guitarist. Brilliant!

Just revisiting the magic world of Dury after a long time away - it's the genuine vision that Barbara Windsor could only dream of in 'er worst nightmare. Having grown up in Walthamstow when Billericay was a fabled and exotic location in darkest Essex where posh people moved to escape the smoke, never to return, in a blend of music hall, rugby songs and shakespeare (the pub - not the writer), Dury paints some of the characters we all knew, but tried not to.All expense spared

if you haven't got it already, or haven't even heard (of) it, then buy it. It is funny, shocking, moving, musically exceptional, rude and has some of the best lyrics of any album anywhere.Unless you're easily offended, or don't like listening to the words, do yourself a favour and get it.

I bought this in order to reminisce - and it didn't disappoint. Strong musical themes, great lyrics, and lashings of humour. Magnificent......
