I am puzzled as to why so many of you are writing reviews for Season 2 of the reimagined series currently being shown on Sky. This, as the title clearly points out, is the original movie from 1978. It is unfortunate that Amazon themselves cannot tell the difference as they have listed the actors from the reimagined series as the stars!

This is the film that...

3.0 out of 5 stars BEWARE: Not Anamorphic Ratio
Great film, which was shown in cinemas, edited from the Original TV Series. Having already purchased the Complete Series boxset, I got this thinking it would be Anamorphic. This should basically mean Widescreen filling 16:9. Unfortunately this is 4:3 Letterbox with black bars, so some of the resolution is lost. Just a warning, if anyone is bothered by this.

This is the film that started it all 28 years ago (God, that makes me feel old!). Universal wanted to cash in on the success of the then newly released Star Wars and asked TV producer and creator Glen Larson to come up with something. That something became Battlestar Galactica. Almost 30 years on the effects do look cheesy and dated, but for what it did for TV sfx was astounding. Only movies had previously been filled with such effects. The pedigree of the effects team was obvious, with many coming straight from Star Wars to this.

The story of the original has almost been taken up by the remake. The only obivous changes are that time has moved on in the last 28 years and we are more aware of other events. The story tells of how the Cylons lure the humans into a treaty to allow them to strike. The story of how the Cylons came to be or why humanity is in dispute with them is never revealed. But the characters are the same and their drive and motivations are the same.

For those that only know of the remake, you may be disapointed with this, but it is still a worthwhile viewing. For those of us old enough to remember the original, it is an opportunity to spend some time in nostalgia.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good drama and sci-fi romp, not particularly deep, 11 April 2008

Battlestar Galactica was one of those late 70s / early 80s shows which quickly entered into popular culture. It has an excellent cast, including Starbuck (played by Dirk Benedict) who is a smoking, drinking, gambling, womanising pilot (with marked similarities to the Han Solo persona) and the more serious Captain Apollo (Richard Hatch) who is son of Commander Ardama (more like the serious foil / Luke Skywalker role). Commander Adama (Lorne Greene - from Bonanza) plays the main role as the serious commander of the Galactica ship.

Despite all the song and dance made of the similarity with Star Wars (Ep IV), this is a separate idea, and has more in common with a US military operation which operates like an aircraft carrier. The nice twist here is that they are carrying civilians too and are the last survivors of the cylon attack. It was a great idea for a series but after the first season it was clear they were starting to run out of ideas within the sitcom formula. The movie is a good entry point and will let you know whether you want to expore further - but be warned it is normally included in most versions of series 1 (1978) so you will end up buying it twice if you decide you like this. Also will be interesting for people who have seen the re-imagining and want to know how it all began.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great movie in need of the Star Wars (eps 4 to 6) treatment, 26 Feb 2011

This review is from: Battlestar Galactica - The Movie [DVD] [1980] (DVD)
I loved this film as a kid. So after watching the new series I decided to buy the original movie. The film and action are great but it needs the Star Wars (episodes 4 to 6) treatment. The picture quality is not particular good and with the restricted screen size the viewing experience was not good. An extra star for the nostalgia factor

5.0 out of 5 stars NOT THE SERIES, but a fine film., 25 Sep 2007
This review is from: Battlestar Galactica - The Movie [DVD] [1980] (DVD)
Ok, to try and straighten this out: This is NOT any of the 3 seasons of the current and excellent series of BSG, or the excellent 2 part pilot episode that preceded the current series. This is the film, based very closely around the book from which it all started, that preceded the original and somewhat dodgy 1970 tv series which is also out on DVD. As to the film itself, I cannot really say truthfully as to whether or not this is a good film- that I'll leave to the opinionated critics. I personally believe this is an excellent film that holds true to fans of the book in every respect. If you can stand the very 1970s "special" effects then this is a serious alternative for fans of the Star Wars saga, Star Trek series and other camp '70s Sci Fi. For anyone not sure about the genre, the best I can describe it is "Top Gun" in outer space.

This review is from: Battlestar Galactica - The Movie [DVD] [1980] (DVD)
Bought, (at a good price) as a nostalgia trip, to see again a film I last saw 30 yrs ago. The acting talents of Lorne Greene, Richard Hatch and Dirk Benedict, backed up by Wilfred Hyde-White, Ray Milland and Jane Seymour still hold sway, and the film was as enjoyable as ever. For anybody who does not know the scenario of the film and T.V. series, it is about a group of earth type planets who have been battling the 'Cylons' (apparently lizard like creatures) for centuries. Finally a peace treaty is arranged, but they are betrayed, and on the day of the signing an ambush by the Cylons destroy all but one of their 'Battlestars', and then go on to wipe out the Humans on the Planets. Collecting what remains of the planets population, on a 'rag-tag' group of space craft, and being pursed by the Cylons, the surviving Battlestar 'Galactica' leads them on an intercalactic quest for a legendary thirteenth Planet, 'Earth'. Basically, cosmic cowboys and indians, but with special effects by John Dykstra, the man that did Star Wars, very watchable.
