5.0 out of 5 stars Have the CD wanted the SACD
This was recorded at what I would consider Anna Netrebko's prime. This is a stunning high quality recording in SACD format which delivers a tremendous listening experience. Is it better than the CD? Well if you have an SACD player it is otherwise it just plays the CD layer which of course is just a CD.

3.0 out of 5 stars Vocally lagging behind the wonderful visual impact.
Anna Netrebko is a great operatic soprano.
The statement is fortified by her riveting acting onstage and her ability to capture audience's fancy by her striking stage presence.

Anna Netrebko is a great operatic soprano.

This is a great star soprano.
Having said that, while she does have the making of a great singer, being endowed with a beautiful dark-hued lyrical soprano with a good range and large volume, she has the greatest draw-back of being 'beautifully shallow' in her characterisations.
Nor do I think that coloratura is her cup of tea. I still opine that her Russian operatic repertoire as she sang it in the days at Russia at Kirov represents the best of Anna Netrebko, and not the Italian bel cantos or Verdi. The Italianate flavour is lacking, the sound production being a bit too rear for the Italianate style.
A difficult choice is facing Ms Netrebko, obviously. To miss the juicy apple of Italian opera? I don't think that will be her choice. In that case, she wagers to suffer the comment of being more beautiful visually than being vocally great. Which is a great shame for such a promising singer.

This disc is all about the extra quality of the physical recording process and has no real impact on how she interprets or delivers each piece. If you liked the original CD and have an SACD player then IMHO it is worth re-investing in this version.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking, 26 Oct 2004
This review is from: Sempre libera (Audio CD)
Anna Netrebko has been gifted with a wonderfully large, expressive range and on this recording you get to hear that range in fine form.
The SACD format is ideal for the capture of Sopranos as it has significantly more headroom for the higher frequencies (100 KHz against CDs 20 KHz), and this recording in particular stands out as a true indicator as to what is possible with the format.
It is worth noting that Sempre libera has one of the few 5.1 mixes available on both DVD-A and SACD that manages not to be a tacky and throw effects/single instruments onto the rear channels. Instead reflections of the front speakers are the main fair of the rear speakers, making for a much more expansive mix than the 2 channel CD or SACD mix.
