Highwaymen (2004)

A movie about mayhem on the highways that might not be to every one's taste. But I have watched the dvd three times, so far, and found that I had appreciated the film a bit more after each viewing

The story is about James Rennie Cray, or Rennie, for short, (Jim Caviezel,) who is on a revenge mission seeking the psychopathic killer, known as Fargo (Colm Feore,) who deliberately and savagely ran down his wife two years ago. Fargo has been brutally killing women, with his powerfully re-structured 1972 Eldorado, on the roads all over the country, and police forces have been quite unaware of his existence. His latest road victims have been: Alex Farrow (Andrea Roth,) and Ray Boone (Gordon Currie), both of whom had been friends of Molly's (Rhona Mitra) who, herself, now faces certain death by the relentess road killer. Molly, who had also lost both parents in a road accident, is befriended by Rennie. The two, hindered and assisted by a state traffic investigator named Macklin (Frankie Faison,) and with Molly as bait, attempt to trap a cleverly elusive killer.

The 80 minutes duration of the movie pass ever so quickly, and it is action all the way.

4.0 out of 5 stars No Stagecoaches, no masked men....., 17 May 2014

But there is a horse running loose in the tunnel. This single disc isn't what you'd expect from the title, it's nothing to do with robbery -unless you mean the taking of life.
Rennie Cray,[Jim Caviezel] tries in vain to stop a deliberate hit and run on his wife. Skip five years and Rennie is still in pursuit of his wife's killer, psychopath James Fargo [Colm Feore]. Enter Rhona Mitra as Molly, a survivor of his latest murder spree. What follows is a tense car chase thriller that never really gives up its quick pace.
Much of the action is centred around the two featured cars, either in them or around them, inevitably one thinks of films such as 'Duel', 'Christine' or even 'The Hitcher', but this film fails to generate the intense feelings of paranoia or fear that those instilled. Thus the four star rating.
The acting throughout is good and, sure, the plot in places is highly improbable but that's true of most action movies. The disc itself only has the usual set up and scene selection features along with a trailer [which I wouldn't watch until after the film as it pretty much gives you the ending].
The 18 rating actually seems a bit out of place - I guess because hit and run is so plausible, there are a lot of 15 rated films out there that contain greater gore, sex, violence and swearing [which I don't recall in this]. Anyway, if you haven't seen this but you like cars, action movies, Caviezel or Mitra, then this is definitely one to try.

Rennie Cray (Caviezel) is the hunter in a game of highway cat & mouse across America. Seeking out deadly revenge on the illusive Fargo (Feore), who purposely mowed down his wife Olivia (Guylaine St-Onge). He didn't manage to kill him first time around, instead badly injuring him & getting himself a longer prison sentence than Fargo. Finding out he's back to his old ways, some years of searching later , Fargo's set his sights on Molly Poole (Mitra), and when his motorway carnage doesn't claim her life, his infatuation with her becomes the bait Cray needs to catch his man & finish the job.

Overall Highwayman is a good road movie, that harnesses the isolation & fragility of the characters which Director Robert Harmon used to aplomb in his claim to fame directional debut, now cult classic, The Hitcher. The action set pieces are what really sell this movie, particularly the early tunnel pile up that gives us a good understanding of Fargo's sadistic enjoyment. In that scene though, no one challenging Cray's free roaming of the crime scene, surrounded by cops & the like, begged disbelief. Shaking off Cray's attempt to help her, it quickly leads into the other jaw dropping action set piece, as Molly vehicle is dragged by Fargo's car via a chain, and Cray sweeping in to save her & set up the rest of the film. Which sadly doesn't come close to surpassing these two brilliant scenes in the action stakes, as it takes time out to delve into the back story of the key characters. Which kinda kills the pace of the film with it, as it turns into a more predictable thriller.

Jim Caviezel (Person of Interest) & Rhona Mitra (Underworld) are credible in their respective roles, although a bit gloomy & unexciting. Colm Feore (The Chronicles Of Riddick) was okay as the baddie, but to be honest i found the role was more menancing when you didn't know/see who was driving the car. But never the less a very interesting idea of this disabled man being part of his car. Frankie Faison's (The Wire) motorway detective added a little humor, well, one very good laugh thanks to the mechanic playing off him to be truthful. Otherwise he felt like a spare wheel.

In conclusion, Highwayman opens strongly with it's menacing horror coupled with high octane, exciting car chases. But having played it's strongest card, it left itself with nowhere to go. Contains mild language & graphic violence. Worth a watch.

Jim Caviezel's style is brooding and minimalistic:whether you like that or not will probably dictate whether you like this film or not.

There are traces of 'The Hitcher'(both versions, the later version directed by Harmon himself) and 'Duel' in this film but it didn't reach the intense levels of chilling fear generated by the earlier films possibly because the maniac driver was a paraplegic and confined to a wheelchair.
It just seemed very improbable to me that he could travel all around the country so easily without expert medical care and facilities for the disabled.

Caviezel is tracking him to take revenge for mowing down his wife some years previously.
So its a chase film,a road movie in the true sense with hardly any scenes shot in houses and minimum scenes filmed indoors.
Mostly everything is set on the road or inside a car.Director Robert Harmon has given us another work on the lines of The Hitcher with a different slant:if you enjoyed that you will probably enjoy Highwaymen.

4.0 out of 5 stars When murder is no accident, revenge is no crime., 8 Feb 2014

Car chase thriller starring Jim Caviezel as Rennie Cray, who, since the hit-and-run murder of his wife, has been driving across America in pursuit of the man responsible for her death. The man he seeks is wheelchair-bound serial-killing psychopath James Fargo (Colm Feore), who, since having his heart broken by a woman years earlier, has repeatedly used his specially adapted 1972 Cadillac Eldorado as a lethal weapon, mowing down any beautiful woman who crosses his path. As the cat-and-mouse chase reaches its terrible climax, a beautiful singer, Molly (Rhona Mitra) becomes embroiled in Rennie's quest for revenge.

I enjoyed this film as i'm a fan of Jim Caviezel, with great landscapes and long empty roads are brilliantly photographed well directed and solid acting all round.

JC does choose films a little out of the norm and this is no exception. Well worth watching though - rather creepy.
