Brought this as we moved into a new house and needed to put up shelves/curtains etc as there were none. Apparently there are wires in almost every inch of the wall tested. The AC alarm especially bleeps almost ALL the time, and when it stops, it never stops in the same place. Very confusing. Rubbish instructions, and in my opinion, not worth the money. I brought it because I thought that Stanley was reliable, but sadly, this has not been my experience this time. Having looked at many reviews since I have had difficulties with it, I have found that many people on the amazon.com site have had similar problems to me.

I bought this after reading a number of reviews on stud finding devices with a mixed bag of reviews on almost all of them. I bought this one because of the Stanley name as I had their tools before and they were decent. This thing is useless however going off at either every opportunity or not going off at all even giving different results if you go back on the same piece of wall.

This product claims to locate electrical wiring; well it doesn't. Where there is wiring the signal goes on for so long that if you were to believe you would end up taking the whole down. I even tried it on a wall where I knew there to be know wiring and the alarm still went off. Sorry, but if this is an example of Stanley's product quality control, it's rubbish. If you are looking for a present for a DIY enthusiast you don't like, get them one of these, it will drive them bonkers.

Hi there,

Bought this item recently and it does exactly what it says on the tin. Finds the studs through plaster board with ease and would appear to be pretty accurate. Used it to find the wall studs for fixing LCD TV wall mount. TV is still on wall, so all good. Very easy to use and well made. You need to supply a battery. Also locates live cables although i would probably say that the detection area is quite wide around the cable, so i would be careful if placing fixings near a cable.

Just a quick add on for this review. Although this sensor is great on plasterboard walls, it is not good on Lathe and Plaster walls/ceilings.

This is so hit and miss it can be classed as dangerous because you won't be certain of where the electric wires are. I tried mine several times over a spot where I know electric wires are in position, sometimes it bleeped correctly but alarmingly sometimes it didn't bleep at all. The instructions are dreadful and Stanley should be ashamed of themselves. Mine is now in the bin because I cannot TRUST it!

Rubbish, it does not work, do not buy this product, it gives misleading results, spend a bit more and get one that works, it certainly damages Stanley's reputation

This worked ok when we first got it (about a year ago) but it's now absolutely useless. When you click the activation switch the AC detector is constantly beeping, as if our house is covered in wires (even in the air). I've tried following the calibration instructions in the manual but it still doesn't work.

Some people here seem a bit confused: This is *NOT* for detecting electrical wires, it's for detecting studs (i.e. the wooden frame behind plasterboard).
I'd agree it can be difficult to reliably locate studs or joists, though.

[From the instructions:
Cautions on Operating:

The proximity of electrical wiring or pipes to the surface of the wall may cause the IntelliSensor™ unit to detect them as studs. You should always use caution when nailing, cutting or drilling in walls, ceilings and floors that may contain these items. Always remember that studs or joists are normally spaced 16 inches or 24 inches apart and are 1-1/2 inches in width. To avoid surprises be aware that anything closer together or of a different width may not be a stud, joist or fire break.

I wanted to drill a hole in a wall, used this to check if there are any wires/studs, it didn't deep at all, then I drilled into a wire and had a massive spark, ended up with paying big bill repairing the wire in the wall..... NOT recommended!
