5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Combination
It is so refreshing to hear that artist are appearing from out off nowhere and giving the music industry a good shake!!!!. The Darkness did it first and this band equally do it justice. It's a perfect combination of genre, Rock and bluegrass, It instantly reminds you of the car chase scenes in Dukes of Hazard with some hard picking banjo, guitar and violin. It is an...

3.0 out of 5 stars Novelty value wears thin quite quickly
In theory this looks like a great oddball idea - our favourite rock tracks given the hillbilly bluegrass country treatment. It's not entirely new, of course - Bernie Leadon of the Eagles took time out 15 years ago to do something similar, though not to the really heavy metal tracks, under the name of Run C&W, and there's many a cajun band around that likes to dip into the...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Album of 2004, 31 Aug 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Let There Be Rockgrass (Audio CD)
Hayseed dixie are a Bluegrass band from the deep south of the USA . They've been going for about 4 years , doing covers of rock classics in their own inimitable "Rockgrass" style . This is the first album officially available over here , and is a compelation of stuff off their first 3 albums along with some previously unreleased live stuff : And it's fantastic , I know from the above description that it sounds like they're a novelty covers band , but they're not , they're a bunch of very talented musicians who play some of the best bluegrass music you'll ever hear . Buy it , you won't be disappointed .

In theory this looks like a great oddball idea - our favourite rock tracks given the hillbilly bluegrass country treatment. It's not entirely new, of course - Bernie Leadon of the Eagles took time out 15 years ago to do something similar, though not to the really heavy metal tracks, under the name of Run C&W, and there's many a cajun band around that likes to dip into the great rock and roll songbook from time to time.

This album acts as a compilation of Hayseed Dixie's previous works, devoted to AC/DC and Kiss, and adding in some more mainstream material (Queen, Bad Company, Darkness, and Motorhead's "Ace of Spades") that will be familiar to the UK market, and which do actually work quite well. It's all acoustic, the guitar-picking is accomplished and it sounds as if a good time was being had by all.

There are also three original compositions, one of which, "I'm Keeping Your Poop (In A Jar)" is wicked, and only 2mins 20sec long. And therein lies the problem with much of the rest of this album - many of the other tracks go on too long, even if they're only three and a half minutes, due to the relatively monotonous tone of the guitar/banjo/bass combination and the fact that there's not much variation in tempo. The eight and a half minute trudge through "Highway To Hell" quickly palls.

I'm not totally disappointed with my purchase, but it's one to dip in to here and there, rather than listen to all the way through, because the novelty quickly wears thin.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Brilliant, 15 Aug 2004

Hayseed Dixie. Great name. Great album. Every track on the album is excellent. From the several AC/DC covers. to their own tracks. In my opinion, the best track on the album is the cover of J giles band "Centerfold". It's almost as if it's been written for Hayseed Dixie themselves.
Overall, brilliant 15 tracks of pure fun. Well worth 10 pounds of anybodies money.
Definately a band to see live.

5.0 out of 5 stars WARNING - You'll grin till your ears fall off!, 5 April 2005

I stumbled across this album via a review (can't remember which magazine) and bought it because I liked the idea, the concept. From the first moment the laser touched the disk I was grinning from ear to ear. The story goes that the band were invited to play at the AC/DC end of tour party after the bassist heard the album which should be all the endorsement you need.

Hint: try saying "Hayseed Dixie" as quickly as you can!

As for longevity of the album - well who knows? I can tell you that in over thirty years of music listening from classical to folk to prog rock to jazz to bluegrass to blues to soul and all points between, very few albums survive for more than a month at the top of the play pile but Hayseed Dixie has! I even have a copy in the car - hell, even my eighteen year old son loves their version of "Walk This Way"!

Look, if you love music, buy it, play it, love it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Hillybilly Rock Music, 21 April 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: Let There Be Rockgrass (Audio CD)
If like me you listened to much heavy rock music in the past you will have a soft spot for the tracks on this CD. Although not a fan of Hillybilly music its impossible not to enjoy this music, it will make you laugh initially, but then you begin to appreciate how good these guys are. I would go as far as to say that some of the tracks are better than the originals. Having just seen them play live, which is not an opportunity that should be missed, I can safely say that they are even madder and funnier that what comes across on this CD. Will they last, who knows, and perhaps you will get bored of this CD, but lets face it that applies to most CDs. Buy it, enjoy it and if possible go and see them live.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!, 27 July 2005

As per another reviewer, I heard Ace of Spades on the radio and was intrigued. A friend lent me the Tribute to AC/DC album and I was hooked. As a huge AC/DC fan I was a bit nervous as I couldn't believe the songs could be done any better - but I was wrong. I have not been into bluegrass music before but this combination is great. Hayseed Dixie manage to keep the feel of the original song but do it differently - and can they play those instruments! I've booked my tickets to see them in September in Glasgow and am looking forward to an entertaining night. Sources say they were great at T in the Park.

However a warning to those with children - the lyrics are very clear - I didn't know how rude "Walk This Way" was! Be careful who you play this to - my seven year old loves singing "Big Balls" from the other album and has to be warned not to sing it in front of Granny!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hayseed Dixie rule, 29 July 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Let There Be Rockgrass (Audio CD)
Blue Grass country covers of C*ck Rock bands. This is a definate must have album - one of those dimonds in the rough of the South USA Scene. It really shouldn't work but it blummin does. The rough transition from A cover of the Darkness - 'I believe in a thing called love' to 'The Ace of Spades' from Motorhead is truely inspiring stuff. I haven't seen them live yet but it's a show I know I'm not gonna miss.
Man I can't tell you how much you should buy this album- you deserve it for your soul & sanity.
One downside, there are only 15 tracks on it - we want more!

I first heard 'Ace of Spades' on the radio and it made me laugh so much that I had to buy the album. No disappointment there. The band are truly rockin' (can you say that about bluegrass?). Best CD I have bought all year. Get's played about once a day. Buy it; tell your friends to buy it.
