This review is from: Action (Audio CD)
This overlooked BLUE NOTE album was recorded in New Jersey on September 16, 1964 and features emotional alto playing from Jackie McLean with Charles Tolliver(trumpet) and a superb rhythm section of Bobby Hutcherson(vibes); Cecil McBee(bass) & Billy Higgins(drums).
The five memorable tracks include two originals each from McLean & Tolliver plus one standard. Highlights include McLean's freeish 'Action', Tolliver's haunting ballad 'Wrong Handle' and a beautiful version of 'I Hear A Rhapsody'.
This RVG Edition(2004) of 'Action' still sounds fresh almost 50 years later and should appeal to anyone who appreciates passionate and adventurous modern jazz.
