5.0 out of 5 stars Sounds, 9 Nov. 2009
This review is from: Patterns in a Chromatic Field (Audio CD)
The reason I am posting a review is that I feel Feldmans music should have stars next to his titles. For a more accomplished review of some of his music I recommend the review for Piano and String Quartet. This is music where the sound of each note is what matters. 'Patterns is a piece for piano and cello.
I wish the manufacturers would put more than one track on the Feldman CDs however, as you cannot move to a later section but always have to start at the beginning.
The sleeve notes are a few quotes from Feldman which are helpful.

This is a fascinating recording. It is essentially a patchwork of sounds, rhythms and melodic statements that run together over the course of eighty minutes or so in the form of a piano /cello duet, although conversation may be more of an accurate description of the process involved.

In a way this music is all about sound and silence. Each note is designed to have an effect - the way that a note is created, delivered, how it corresponds to other notes and chords and ultimately how it falls away into silence. This is music goes from the disquieting and atonal to moments of fervent activity and passages of heart-rending limpid beauty.

Is this program difficult? I think it makes demands on the listener. The listener has to be prepared to concentrate. Only in concentrating will the beauty of Feldman's conception become apparent.

Highly enjoyable recording. Excellent performances, sleevenotes and sonics. The only downside- the fact the album is one track long, meaning that no dipping in and out allowed. Recommended.
