4.0 out of 5 stars Good but not the astonishing surprise of the previous one, 18 April 2005
This review is from: Population 1 Import Japan (Audio CD)
Although I always acknowledged Nuno Bettencourt as a gifted guitar player while he was with "Extreme", I really came to love his eclectic way of making music with his first solo album Schizophonic (1996), a true jewel very hard to find these days...
Nuno's 2002 solo album, "Population 1", maybe is not the astonishing surprise of the previous one, but more its follow up. In that sense, besides discovering that Nuno has developed a truly beautiful voice, which he displays in a very complicate tessitura ("Flow" and "If only"), there are not really big surprises in "Population 1". Having said this, you may get to think that it will disappoint you, and you'll be dead wrong. This is a great album, with songs for almost any taste, from more or less pop tunes ("Iron Jaw") to hard rock ("Rescue") or even country-ish ones ("Quiet Peaceful Day"). Anyhow, there are three songs which stand out from the rest: "Unhappy b-day", the funniest song I've heard lately, a truly funky play with a sour twist quite easily to share when you've gone beyond your thirstiest birthday, "Stiff", which is a lecture on progressive rock and a terrific display of Nuno's ability at playing guitar, and "Dedication breakup", a beautiful song I find hard to explain because somehow it tunes with some inner pain of mine, which made me cry the first time I listened to it... Someone may also mention "Sick Punk", probably the song thought for becoming the hit of the album, as a great song, and I quite agree, really, actually I totally love the initial bass riff but, to be honest I also found it a bit soulless...
