4.0 out of 5 stars Timeless blues, 22 Feb 2003

Muddy Waters may have recorded better songs than most of the ones on this album, but the super-competent backing band and sympathetic production still makes this a really fine blues album.
The three "classics" which were re-recorded for this release ("Mannish Boy", "I Want To Be Loved" and "I Can't Be Satisfied") are certainly the highlights of the album, but the rest is well worth listening to as well, and the surprisingly "traditional" reworking of "I Can't Be Satisfied" is worth the price of the CD alone. The incredibly catchy acoustic slide guitar riff sounds like the very best of the 40s, only with all the benefit of the technical equipment of the 70s.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Blues album - A MUST HAVE, 27 Feb 2011
This review is from: Hard Again (Audio CD)
I've had this album a long time and was surprised to see so few reviews on it!
Every track on this rocks and no blues collection would be complete without it.
Don't hesitate! But it now!

A superb cd. Everything comes up as fresh as a daisy as if all the songs have never been recorded before.Muddy Waters is on top form superbly complemented by Johnny Winter and the rest of the band.

5.0 out of 5 stars First of three killer albums, 23 Mar 2006

Most of the old blues legends hit their peak in the 40s or 50s and then petered out. Muddy Waters however had a remarkable resurgence of energy and creativity right at the end of his life, when he teamed up with Johnny Winter and a killer band to record three stunning albums for the Blue Sky Label. This, from 1977, is the first of them. Sleazy, greasy R&B is what you get here. James Cotton on harp. Pintetop Perkins on the piano. Sizzling stuff.

A truly superb blues album. Maybe not in an 'original' style but the production values and style of Johnny Winter make this a truly great album. Muddy's work here is extremely good and VERY enjoyable. The two of them together make this an album that no blues enthusiast, or music lover, should miss out on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Muddy Waters classic Chicago blues, 11 Jan 2003
This review is from: Hard Again (Audio CD)
This album is a classic hard blues album. Johnny Winter plays guitar on most of the tracks and it was recorded 'live' in the studio. There's areal buzz from their playing and the sound engineer left in a little banter between players. It's very focused storming 12 bar Chicago blues - much of it verging on what might be called rock. If you like rock but aren't particularly a blues fan then try this...you'll love it!. Equally if you like acoustic blues then this may be a little heavy for you....

I bought this album when it came out and I still can't hear it enough! Muddy Waters was a true great, of course, and so much of what he has done is cherishable, but this one with it's band of great blues artists and the new sound that Johnny Winter put together for them is just so outrageously, raucously contemporary (it still sounds that way after all these years) ... . Buy this one and buy it's true companion (Johnny Winter's "Nothin but the blues") now!

love the blues, especially when done by the masters, such as Muddy Waters and B.B. King. Some excellant tracks, nicely put together.

5.0 out of 5 stars Muddy's Magnum Opus, 14 Mar 2014

Everything about this album oozes quality. There are some re-workings of old songs, but they are sonically superior to his earlier versions. This is not just one of Muddy's greatest albums, it's one of the greatest blues albums of all time. Buy it!
