4.0 out of 5 stars A pianist's pianist, 23 Nov 2004

This review is from: Mozart: The Complete Piano Concertos (Audio CD)
There is the kind of pianist where you find yourself saying "Ah - Glenn Gould!" and the kind where you find yourself saying "Ah - Mozart!". In Karl Engel's case, here is the "Ah Mozart" player par excellence. Engel, and Hager, his conductor, play fine, nuanced Mozart, but without those oh-so-subtle dynamics that characterise Perahia's celebrated versions, or the little bonsai phrasings that make Uchida a darling to the people who like that sort of thing.
Yet the detail is there - Mozart's detail. Pianist and orchestra stick well to Mozart's own indications (the performances used the then new Mozart edition that has swept away all those rotten editions we grew up with). Though played on modern instruments, the scale and approach are unlikely to offend the purists either.
Honest, affectionate and sensitive Mozart from a pianist whose standing is far higher among pianists than it has ever been among the public, more's the pity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mozart without affectation,Mozart comes first!, 9 Oct 2010

On Ronan's recommendation I bought this boxed set.
I can only say,Thank You Ronan.
This is how Mozart should be played/interpreted.
Engel allows himself to be a conduit for Mozart,he doesn't allow his personality to get between you and Wolfgang Amadeus.
The sound quality is excellent, the piano is to the fore(but not too much) and the orchestra is well balanced and never drowns out the piano(something that happens on too many recordings.)
At this sort of bargain price,if you want a complete Mozart Piano Concertos you cannot do better!

5.0 out of 5 stars No real complaints, 10 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This collection is seen as played in the Authentic Mozart fashion - no over-blown stuff. The tone for me is very acceptable if you want a comfortable reference set.
