5.0 out of 5 stars Baseball History - the early years, 13 July 2009
This review is from: Baseball - 1846 To 1920 [1994] [DVD] (DVD)
I have only just started watching this but the first hour or so will be sufficient to convince me to buy the complete set. Ken Burns is a well known documentary maker in the US and here the focus is America's Favourite Pastime - Baseball.

Being the early years, there is little video footage to complement the narrative, but the photographs of the time coupled with the background music create a wonderful snapshot of the period. The history is divided into many short bite-size chapters so this is not a DVD you would necessarily sit down and watch in one go. Rather it is one to savour and watch gradually.

There are criticisms that the later DVDs are too New York or East coast centric, but with such a vast history to cover I guess a lot had to be missed out. If you're looking for baseball action then on early viewing this might not be the one for you, but if you want a fascinating look back at the early days of the game then this is well worth a try.
