4.0 out of 5 stars Action and melons., 12 April 2013
This review is from: Mister Majestyk [DVD] (DVD)
This is a super film with no superfluous padding and none of the frenetic camerawork that seems to plague so many modern action films. Bronson plays a man who wants a peaceful life harvesting his melons before they are over-ripe. Unfortunately, obstacles are placed in his way in the form of a cocky small-time local crook and a rather more dangerous mob hit-man. Bronson gives a believable performance with no histrionics and no comic book violence. He possesses the calm and determined demeanour of a man who won't be pushed around and knows that he has the capacity to cope with whatever is thrown at him. The camerawork is great and the supporting actors very good, particularly the hit-man played by Al Lettieri. Print quality is particularly good in the outdoor scenes (about 90% of the film) and a little grainy in the indoor scenes. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars majestic majestyk, 25 July 2011
This review is from: Mister Majestyk [DVD] (DVD)
I saw this film many years ago on tv, Not the usual Bronson type, but the usual Bronson action. It is full of action once it gets going and the support actors are well selected for their parts. One normally expects Bronson to give back plenty of revenge once he gets wound up and this film shows him at his best. I recommend this to all Bronson fans as well as those that enjoy gangster come-upance. Very enjoyable with the hint of romance with rather a lovely co-star. Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars "You keep talking and I'm gonna take your head off.", 14 May 2013

"You make sounds like you're a mean little ass-kicker, only I ain't convinced. You keep talking and I'm gonna take your head off."

Despite finding success in Europe, Charles Bronson still hadn't made it really big in the US in 1974, so Mr. Majestyk was marketed less on his name than on the promise of Richard Fleischer's film being another Billy Jack or Walking Tall, but the film was part of a one-two whammy with Death Wish, released only a week later, that finally propelled him to superstar status Stateside. Bronson may have managed to antagonise his director and crew so much that, according to Fleischer, they would barely talk to him after the first day's shooting but it's the perfect star vehicle for him as the kind of guy who keeps himself to himself until he's pushed too far. Elmore Leonard's script casts him as a melon farmer who manages to get on the wrong side of both Paul Koslo's small-time local hood who tries to cut in on his business and Al Lettieri's hitman with a seriously bad temper, with the police all too happy to use him as live bait and regarding the possibility of him getting killed as a bit of a bonus. All Bronson wants to do is get in his melon crop before his farm goes under, but with Lettieri and co. scaring off or crippling his workers and shooting up his crop it's only a matter of time before a melon farmer's gotta do what a melon farmer's gotta do...

Leonard cut his teeth on westerns, and this is very much a well-crafted modern western crossover to his now more recognised thriller work, but it knows its audience and their expectations perfectly and delivers the kind of decent-guy-fighting-back-after-being-pushed-too-far action movies that moviegoers in the 70s just lapped up, and it holds up remarkably well today. Fleischer had already delivered one minor classic thriller down on the farm with 1955's Violent Saturday and here his more than capable direction displays the kind of invisible professionalism that raises the film above its B-movie potential without drawing too much attention to itself while still making the most of the big setpieces like the botched attempt to rescue Lettieri in transit that drives much of the plot and the celebrated machine-gunning of the hero's melon crop sequence that sets the stage for the real violence to come. Bronson's on good form, with Lettieri a particularly threatening bull in a china shop and Paul Koslo giving good weasel as the lowlife with ideas above his abilities who sets the ball rolling. All in all perfectly satisfying Saturday night action fare.

MGM/UA's 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen DVD is for the most part a decent transfer, though it has trouble with a few of the darker shots. While the US NTSC release has the original trailer, the PAL version released in most of the rest of the world is extras free.

5.0 out of 5 stars Death Wish In Coloardo!, 15 Jun 2004
This review is from: Mister Majestyk [DVD] (DVD)
I am a big fan of Charles Bronson and i have seen many of his films, and when you look at all of his films, this one is surely in the top few best ones. Its very much like 'Death Wish' really but set in Colorado and instead he is a farmer.
Charles Bronson plays a tough melon farmer called Vincent Majestyc, a former US Ranger in Vietnam. Majestyc who has already hired a crew to pick his one hundred and sixty acres of melons, is forced by a 'cowboy' to use his crew which are cheaper. However Majestyc is not used to being pushed around and assalts the man with a shotgun, and later ends up in jail on assalt charges.
While in jail he meets Frank, a tough Mafia hitman, who has planned an attack on a bus that the prisoners are traveling on so that he can escape. However Majestyc kidnaps Frank and takes him to a hunting cabin in the woods, and tries to make a deal with the cops, that if he gives them Frank, they will drop the assalt charges. They agree and Majestyc's attemps to take him down to the 'cop-shop' are interupted by a woman who has come to rescue Frank.
Now free, Frank swears to kill Majestyc and gets the 'cowboy' to drop the assalt charges so that Majestyc will go back to his melon farm, and become a 'sitting duck'. However what Frank doesn't know is that Majestyc is a Vietnam vet and when his melons are trashed, his friends legs broken, and his picking crew run off the land, he is forced to put his military training back into use, and defend his land, his friends, and most of all his own life.
Charles Bronson, as always is perfect for this type of role and he really does deliver in this film, playing a melon farmer who only wants to get his crop in, but when pushed to the limit, will do everything he can to defend himself and his farm.
Overall this is a really excellent film and i am actually quite supprised that it is not more heard of. Even so don't let that put you off buying it because i can assure you it is worth every penny and will bring you hours and hours of pure entertainment. Highly recommended not only to Bronson fans, but also to fans of action films in general.

4.0 out of 5 stars 'ALL 'VINCE' WANTED TO DO IS 'HARVEST' HIS 'MELON' CROP', 3 July 2014

''Vince Majestyk' (Bronson) is a 'Mellon' farmer, when the crop is ready he hires a
team of pickers to harvest the crop, however would-be hardman 'Bobby Kopas'
(Paul Koslo) try's to impose his own workers on 'Vince' who is having none of it.
A short while later after his encounter with 'Kopas' who he'd turned off his property
'Vince' is arrested for assault.
This proves to be only the beginning of 'Vince's' problems, when with other prisoners
he is being transported for a hearing, gunmen try to hijack the Bus and Police escort
with the intention of releasing 'Mafia' Hit-Man 'Frank Renda' (Al Letteira)
During a frantic fire-fight 'Vince' takes over the Bus and speeds off with just the Hitman
still cuffed on-board.
'Vince' try's to do the right thing, however the Police aren't listening, 'Frank' gives
'Vince' a lucrative option, which is worth considering.
The transfer goes pear-shaped, 'Vince' has clearly made an enemy of the Hit-man.
'Frank' has issues he wants to resolve with a 'bullet'
When 'Frank' has 'Vince's' crops partially destroyed and scares 'Vince's' migrant workers
off, 'Vince' gets somewhat vengeful toward his pursuer.
'Frank' try's to corner 'Vince' who now has 'Nancy' (Linda Cristal) in tow, what follows see's
the Hunter become the Hunted as 'Vince' turns the tables on the Hit-man.
With 'Corrupt -Cops' often looking the other way, an intense car-chase on the back-roads
and dust tracks along with bullets flying the '1974' 'Hollywood-Hardman' 'Bronson' action-
movie is definitely worth a visit.
I thank fellow 'reviewers' 'Timelord' and 'Caligula' for the recommendation.
(No Oscars to be won, however more than worth a viewing)

5.0 out of 5 stars basic action/thriller, 29 May 2004

This review is from: Mister Majestyk [DVD] (DVD)
This has to be one of the best action/thrillers around it is so simple.Charles Brosnan plays Mr Majestyk a former US Ranger in Vietnam who now runs a melon farm. A brief run in with a local mafia goon see's the mafia gunning for him and in the process making the biggest mistake of there lives.
The charcter is played wonderfully by Mr Brosnan, he plays him as a man who has found peace after war. Who is content to just run his farm, yet deep down is capable of killing with such profesionalism if needed.
A must not just for fans of Charles but for fans of action/thrillers alike.

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic and well made Bronson movie, 31 July 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Mister Majestyk [DVD] (DVD)
A classic Bronson movie from 1974. One of Bronson's best films, directed by the none other than Richard Fleischer. With Al Lettieri and Paul Koslo as bad guys. Bronson plays a Vietnam vetaran who just wants to grow his watermelons and otherwise live a peace full life by the principle "live and let live". But a local mafia-like gang, with contacts into the police, chase his seasonal workers away from his farm, and then try to force Bronson to use under-paid illegal workers from Mexico. Bronson, of cause, will not tolerate a gang of criminals to threaten him to run his farm as they tell him, beats up a gangmember (Koslo), and takes back his own seasonal workers. So he put his life in danger, for the local gang is not going to stop. We see Bronson handling the situation in classic style.
