Everything else pails into insignificance against this superb show, you just have to see this once, and you will be hooked. Why oh why they haven't put it on terrestrial here in the UK is just plain wrong. Put pressure on C4 if, like me, you agree that this deserves a much much wider UK audience. The animation here is awe inspiring, the sound and music quality utterly fantastic and voice casting is without questiuon the best you'll find.
Invader ZIM is an eccentric insanely egomanic alien soldier from the planet Irk, who has a penchant for being terribly over dramatic, using ridiculously excessive and elaborate language and gestures, and has the most ridiculous dictatorial walk.
He was banished from the Irken Empire after nearly destroying it on an early mission 'Operation Impending Doom 1'. Upon hearing of Operation Impending Doom II, Zim "quits" being banished and races to the Great Assigning where Irken Elite soldiers are chosen to become Invaders.
After begging his superiors for another chance, they decide to trick him into going on a "secret mission" to an "obscure planet" i.e. a random point in space at the edge of the universe which turns out to be Earth, in hopes that he'll die in transit.
Their trick backfires when ZIM safely reaches Earth and begins his 'ever-so-subtle' conquest of it. He disguises himself as a schoolboy, the disguise consisting of some contact lenses and a black wig, leaving his green skin clearly visible. Despite this the only person who apparently sees straight through his disguise is one of his classmates - Dib, a somewhat insane paranormal researcher, who is intent on stopping ZIM's reign of """terror""".
ZIM's sidekick is GIR, a psychotic, stupid little robot slave belonging to Zim. GIR's normal disguise is an unconvincing green dog suit. He is very easily influenced and impossible to fully control. He is incapable of focusing his attention on important things for long periods and mostly speaks with no relevant coherent thought in mind. He is often the reason Zim fails in his pointlessly convoluted plans. GIR is essentially a hedonist, whose main interests in life are sleeping, dancing, watching TV (in particular, the Angry Monkey show) and eating. He is infatuated with Earth's culture and is extreeeeemely cute.
Just bye this, there is nothing else to say :->

5.0 out of 5 stars "Awwww, but I wanna watch the Scary Monkey Show!", 2 Jun 2004
This review is from: Invader Zim 1: Doom Doom Doom [DVD] [2002] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
Yes, kiddies, it is true! Invader Zim has finally come home to DVD. The cult hit that was too bizarre and dark for Nickelodeon to handle. The fans have demanded for the show to be available, and now here it is. "Invader Zim Volume 1: Doom Doom Doom" is fantastically wild and zany--a show unlike any I have ever seen before.
Zim has been banished by his own planet for the mayhem and destruction he had caused, but to get him out of their hair the higher ups decide to give him a "secret mission." That mission is to take over a planet that nobody on the Irken planet has ever heard of--which turns out to be Earth. The higher ups don't expect him to be successful, but Zim doesn't know that and takes the mission head on with his brainless, but highly entertaining robot slave, Gir. Dib is a kid who is obsessed with aliens and other sorts of "phenomena," and is determined to stop Zim at all costs--that is, unless his sister destroys him for taking the last soda! All of this makes one heck of an entertaining premise for an off-the-wall animated show.
I was extremely happy when this DVD came out and got it as fast as I could. The shows have a very high replay value and they never fail to get a laugh out of me. It's hard to believe that such a show used to be on Nickelodeon... but I guess that's why it isn't on that channel anymore. It is dark and creepy, but it is extremely humorous as well. While Zim is very funny with his outbursts of anger, I have to say that Gir really steals the show. That robot always makes me laugh in some insane way. All of the episodes are great and never lacking.
The DVD has some cool features to offer. It is a two-disc collection that contains episodes 1-9 (most have two episodes each). Some features include commentary, animatics, interviews, and for fun, "Irken" subtitles that can be turned on during each episode.
"Invader Zim: Doom Doom Doom" is definitely something to check out for those who have a warped and dark sense of humor. Don't let the "Nickelodeon" icon fool you, this show is incredibly bizarre and outrageous! Adults are bound to enjoy it as much as the kids, if not more. It's great to see this show finally get the DVD treatment. Now, you can relive some of your favorite episodes over and over again. And if your favorite episode doesn't appear in the volume... never fear. Volume 2 is on the way. Highly original and entertaining. -Michael Crane

I have seen the cartoon of God. words cannot explain the sheer briliance of this ground breaking work of art. the intense insanity transends the definition of cartoon.
Nickelodeon in all honesty does not deserve the honour of having its name associated in any way with this amazing dvd which deserves a golden idol spaced every couple of feet.

Well, this show was not nickelodeons little kiddy show, for one thing it had no sappy morals or messages behind anything, it was dark and twisted. Well it was cancelled and fans where ANGRY! until now!
To be honest, I really love this show. Unlike most nick cartoons, its rewatch value is endless and it generally can be viewed again and again. I was pleased to see the DVDs had commentary aswell, quite franky BUY IT!!!

This is so much fun!! Its just pure anarchy and really not for young children at all. The art work is fantastic, the characters and situations they find themselves in is fantastic. Varquez has really made a triumph here. If you are in the UK and find a DVD player to make this work, it is definitely worth it.

So yea, basically Zim is a short Irken alien from the planet.. Irk, where height matters. On the first Impending Doom mission, Zim got "carried away" in one of the Mega Doomers and trashed the barracks, destroying most of it, and that being done he was banished. But a while later after the place was re-built, n' Invaders come from all over to see if they passed their training test to be given a mission with Impending Doom II. So yea, Zim harasses his bosses until he is given a planet to invade, until finally the bosses come up with a plan. They send him on a "secret mission" to nowhere, to get rid of him... obviously unknown to Zim. With his demented yet cute SIR Unit, (made out of junk... GIR) he leaves with the others to his destination. But to his bosses dreaded surprise he comes across Earth 6 months later, and the story begins. Dib and Gaz are the only humans who know about him... but Earth has nothing to worry about... Zim stinks at invading, y0.
Great work from Jhonen Vasquez. From comic to cartoon; I'm glad it finally came out on DVD for the banning of the program on TV annoyed a lot of fans. Just need it to be available in Region 2 coding. Americans are so bloody lucky.
