This review is from: Horror Classics Collection [DVD] [1959] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
Long time fan of the works of Chris Lee and Peter Cushing these are some of the early and best works. Hammer did good! Hammer Horror Collection (The Curse of Frankenstein / Dracula Has Risen from the Grave / Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed / Horror of Dracula / The Mummy / Taste the Blood of Dracula). Hammer brought lush colour to the old B&W classic, in fast pace, visually beautiful films.
You notice when amazon has used DVD and books listed, an item is good if the use price is 1/2 the original price. I notice on these, the used price is HIGHER. I think that says it all. Get these for your collection before they run out!

4.0 out of 5 stars Hammer Classics to own on DVD, 11 Feb 2004
This DVD boxset contains three Hammer Classics that paved the way for numerous sequels and spin-offs!
First up is The Curse of Frankenstein. Starring Peter Cushing as the mad barrona and Christopher Lee as his psychotic creation. A legal injunction from Universal prevented Hammer from using the 'bolt-through-the-neck' look made famous by Boris Carloff, so they had to go back to basic on the monster1 The end result is a lot more humanised creature, but all the more frightening for it. Lee's piercing eyes more than make up for his lack of dialogue and the film remains a horror classic.
Next is Horror of Dracula, Hammers first outing with the blood sucking count and arguably the best. Christopher Lee made a name for himself in the title role with his mesmering eyes and his way with women! Sticking closer to the origional story than any of the other Dracula outings this 1957 classic has aged exceedingly well and is still a pleasure to watch!
Finally The Mummy, in my opinion the least of the three (but then I never really got on with the Mummy franchise!) but still well worth watching. Its Lee v Cushing as usual with Lee pursuing Cushing across England as a 2000 year old mummy, seeking to revenge the desercration of his lovers tomb.
All in all a great buy for lovers of old horror movies and I look forward to more Hammer titles being available soon.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pure Classics- But there is a problem- Please Read!, 4 Jan 2013
This review is from: Horror Classics Collection [DVD] [1959] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
Oh my this may well be the greatest horror box set of all. Basically the Americans know how to put classic Hammer movies together- none of this region 2 21 hammer box set, with a few duds here.
These movies are ALL classics.

But I must point out there is a HUGE problem.
Dracula Has Risen From The Grave is lip synched, sorry if I spelt that wrong. That meaning that the voices of the charcaters is not in tune with their lips. This is UNFORGIVEABLE when charging people for their money.
Whats worse is that Risen is one of the better Dracula movies, so it spoils the experience.

However I would still highly recommend this box set if you don't have the other movies, the price is just too good to turn down. You can buy Risen for around 3 quid on region 2, and complete it there.

So for the films its an easy 5 stars but the faulty Risen means minus 1 star.
