5.0 out of 5 stars brilliant album, highly recommended, 7 Jan 2005
This review is from: Your Blues (Audio CD)
Well, this album has completely blown me away, and since there were no reviews I thought I would recommend it - to anyone with a taste in catchy melodies and the more theatrical early Bowie in updated form. Bejar's vocal sounds a bit like a mix of Bowie and Brett Anderson at his most affected - either you love or you dont. This is great pop, or perhaps great indie-electronica as it might be labelled - all songs are in fact very very good quality songwriting, and very well produced it is too, with only synthesizers and an acoustic guitar making great orchestoral soundscapes. Actually, one of the very best parts is that you can actually hear that it is synthesizers; very smooth. Well done!

5.0 out of 5 stars Generically genius, 16 Feb 2011
This review is from: Your Blues (Audio CD)
Dan Bejar's band is called "Destoyer" for very good reason. Bejar makes a strong nod to synth pop here but decronstructs the prevalence of MIDI intrumentation and digital reverb to the point where it sounds generic, cheap and "Final Fantasy esque?"
This of course, is the major attraction for this record and what makes it so unique and cute. Whether it being the watery synth pads or the MIDI trumpet, the album's concept and running theme never fail to keep me happy. Each song is a little gem and it's hard to pick a favourite; "Notorious Lightning, "Actors Revenge" and "Music Lovers" are particular favourites. Bejars typical theatrical lyrics are on a poetic high here and of his most creative and eccentric and still managing to be catchy and comprehensive (somewhat).
The record does suffer from the Marmite so you'll either love this record or be incredibly annoyed by it, but for me it's one of my top ten of all time and is the perfect introduction to Bejar's music.
