This review is from: Bach, J.S.: Suites for Solo Cello (Audio CD)
I have so many recordings of the cello suites by JS Bach that I have lost count. I played Janos Starker's account of the number 5 suite recently and was nearly speechless. He gives a full account of each suite. He is not just good in patches. Gendron is excellent in patches but he is unable to give a complete rendering. The Janos recordings made in the late 1960's are beyond compare. No collection is complete without Starker. If you do not believe me try the number 6 suite. WOW! Janos Starker makes the movements sing and sing. The more serious sections are never romantic or melodramatic but serious and full of contrast and subtlety. The CD is so cheap you simply must buy it if you are serious about the Bach cello suites.
