A hilarious set of characters of which John Candy is but one. 3.0 out of 5 stars Wagons Downhill
The late great John Candy's last cinematic offering, a 1994 Western-comedy, does lack in a number of areas, with a painfully slow first act, tasteless gags that run the gambit from toilet to rape, and a stock of stock cast of characters, complete with redneck brothers, saucy young bride and even the token 90s gay guy. However, director Peter Markle concedes with Wagons'...

This review is from: Wagons East [DVD] [1995] (DVD)
A hilarious set of characters of which John Candy is but one. Most of them had a story to tell and as they slowly unfold during the pioneers' trip home to the east, they intertwine with several unexpected and rib-tickling twists. If you watch this film with interruptions around you, you will almost certainly not get it. Most of the jokes will have gone and will mean nothing to you when they re-appear in another part of the story later. Well-written if slightly obscure at times, but hilarious...? definitely YES.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Do you have a really big book?", 8 April 2007

A hand full of citizens of various occupations and orientations realize the west is not all it is cracked up to be. They decide to go back east, but to do this they will need a skilled and knowledgeable wagon master. Who should stumble in but the best wagon master in the west, James H. Harlow (John Candy). Naturally there is a money grubbing cabal apposed to this move and they will stop at nothing to throat the "Wagons East" plan.

Well designed with a select group of actors that never overplayed their parts. The consumes and scenes here exceptionally good for the comedy. The Indians look like Indians and the floozies look floozy. The film is jam packed with one liners.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a way to end a great Career, 6 Mar 2004
This review is from: Wagons East [DVD] [1995] (DVD)
If you thought "Whos Harry Crumb" and "Trains Planes and Automobiles" were good then you will be amazed by John Candy's hilarious bowing out of the movie scene and alas also mother earth. Non stop jokes throughout the film together with a good story line meant the film could still be made good despite Candys passing away half way through. Its a must for your DVD collection.

3.0 out of 5 stars Wagons Downhill, 2 Aug 2013
This review is from: Wagons East [DVD] [1995] (DVD)
The late great John Candy's last cinematic offering, a 1994 Western-comedy, does lack in a number of areas, with a painfully slow first act, tasteless gags that run the gambit from toilet to rape, and a stock of stock cast of characters, complete with redneck brothers, saucy young bride and even the token 90s gay guy. However, director Peter Markle concedes with Wagons' short run time, competent cinematography with some nice desert vistas, and even the odd chuckle with some Looney Tunes-esque sight gags in the second and third acts concerning the villain's efforts to stop the wagon train and of course, Candy's trademark burly charm that reminds us that, even in the end, he was a true trooper and a committed actor.

Not the perfect or even fitting end for such a man, but it's certainly no 'Disaster Movie'.

1.0 out of 5 stars A total waste of pellicule, 8 Feb 2004

Let me say first that I like John Candy. I love most of his movies and I dig his kind of comedy. But this movie is a real nightmare!
It does not happen very often, but when I rented this for the first time I never got further than halfway before I fell asleep. I actually rented the movie again, sure that there had to be other reasons (being tired for instance) and this time I managed to sit it out until the bitter end.
It did not improve!
I can only recommend not to waste any time on this non-movie.
