Peter Hoskins (Alec Baldwin) and Rita Boyle (Meg Ryan) meet at a party, and it is practically love at first sight. After a whirlwind courtship. they decide to get married. At their wedding, an old man (Sydney Walker) wanders in and kisses the bride. Suddenly, a switch mysteriously takes place. Rita finds her spirit consigned to the body of the old man. The old man, however, gets a new lease on life, as he finds his spirit consigned to the body of the very beautiful and nubile Rita.
On their honeymoon Peter senses that something is not quite right about Rita. It is inexplicable to him that he could have been so mistaken about her. Gone is the Rita with whom he fell in love, his soul mate replaced by a virtual stranger housed in Rita's body. It is from this premise that an allegory on love flows beautifully throughout this film and serves as an insightful commentary on the nature of true love.
When Peter finally is able to figure out what has happened, he contrives to find away a way for Rita to come back to him as she was. You see, he does not love the "new" Rita. As lovely as she is, she is not the Rita with whom he fell in love. It is now the old man to whom he is drawn and with whom he has an affinity. It is the old man whose company he now enjoys.
What happens and why certainly gives the viewer food for thought as to the nature of true love. Very well acted by Alec Baldwin, Meg Ryan, and Sydney Walker, this is a utterly charming, touching, and romantic, gender bender fantasy. The strong supporting cast of Patty Duke, Ned Beatty, Stanley Tucci, and Kathy Bates serve to round out this excellent and entertaining film

1.0 out of 5 stars Love through thick, thin, young and old?, 18 Nov 2008

Peter meets Rita, a bright, slightly unusual woman who he instantly falls head-over-heels in love with. The two have a whirlwind romance and within months are getting married.

At the wedding, everything goes to plan until an old man gate-crashes quietly and asks to kiss the bride. Kissing Rita, however, causes some kind of switch of bodies, leaving her in the old man's body, and leaving him in hers.

On the Honeymoon, Peter realises something isn't quite right when the Rita he thought he knew is suddenly a totally different person than he had married. It doesn't take him long to figure out something happened, and now the woman he's married to is definately NOT Rita.

Even when he does locate his real wife - in the body of the old man who kissed her at the wedding - they're still in a pickle as they're not sure quite how to fix the situation. The only thing that remains the same is that Peter's love for Rita has never ceased, even if she's inhabiting the body of an old man - something that the people seeing this movie will either be disgusted by or entranced by.

While this was listed as a "romantic comedy" I would have to say while romance is the centre plot point here, there is very little to no comedy in this at all. Had it been funny, the movie might have been slightly more entertaining but to me, it just felt terribly sad and long-winded. Perhaps other people will feel differently, but I was disappointed by this.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a plot! What emotion!, 13 Jan 2002

Great casting. Meg Ryan and Alec Baldwin fit in so well. I am proud to be the first to review this. The plot is gripping with highs and lows and always a comic edge. This is a sunny film (bright films are great for 'lifting' you) that leaves you drained by the end, and if only it could be real! So you watch it often as the closest thing to reality. Ned Beatty is endearing in his character. All a bit far fetched but clever and with a daring venture into pure fantasy.

Starts off quite slowly and just when I thought it was going to get boring the wedding day happened. It had a Brilliant twist when the Old Man and the Bride kissed. Very good acting by the 3 main characters, never seen anything quite like this film. It was mainly romantic but had some comedy thrown in.

This is a fantastic not to be missed film, it is funny and keeps you wondering what is going to happen next, and in the end it is all you want to happen, Meg Ryan plays her part to perfection, and Alec Baldwin is very amusing and also is very good.

An oldie but a goodie. There are many reviews out there so I won't go into detail, just to say that this is one of those classics that you will watch over and over again. Especially if you're a romantic soul like moi!
