I watched this when it first came out, age 12. It had me in kinks. So I was rather apprehensive when I rented it recently to show my kids - would it be as funny as I remembered?

Ok, it's a bit badly lit and the special effects aren't up to much by today's standards, but it still remains one of the funniest films ever made. The off-beat humour is ageless, the acting superb. Just the sequence where the ship goes into hyperdrive then stops as suddenly as if it had hit a brick wall has me in stitches.

Up there with Withnail as a comic masterpiece.

Very inferior copy. I had seen the original. The quality, both image and sound is very poor. Sad

I don't know what kind of movies the previous reviewer likes, but for the cognoscenti, Dark Star is unimpeachable.
Teach him phenomenology.

I thought this film was 'crap' and was about to turn off when someone in it said 'it's your turn to go feed the alien' and I got curious! The alien came into it then; it's like a great big beach ball with feet that are like hands! It was quite playful really, and so cute - I want one; I might even make one myself, but I want it to be animated and I don't know what I'd use to make it go, but it does turn things a bit dangerous when it runs amok on the space ship, when someone goes to feed it and it gets out! When it gets shot with a sleeping pellet a bit later on it goes pop, and flies about the room like a burst balloon! I just knew from the moment it escaped it would go pop at some time! I don't think it would have caused so much trouble if that astronaut hadn't been so upset when it got loose...

Being serious now; you've just got to see this movie to believe it! There is also some great suspense when the alien reeks havoc with its carer in a lift shaft. It is clever how they managed to mix such utter farce and comedy with some really good thrilling moments too!

Well worth the price I paid for this DVD!

Watch and Enjoy! : - )

Can't be bothered with the so called technical reviews posted here....

Basically, the Blu-ray DVD has two versions of the (home made, remember this) movie that have been cleaned up. The longer one is the 'theatrical release' and the shorter one is the 'director's cut'. And there are standard definition extra's. The worth of these is up to the purchaser.

I purchased the BR DVD because I wanted it in my collection of cult and archaic Sci Fi movies. Without having seen the DVD or video version of the movie, I guess the quality is pretty good, if not better than the original. Which I haven't seen and never will see.

I'm assuming that the purchasers of this title would be buying it for similar reasons. In my opinion, a worth addition to my collection.

40 years since I last saw it. I enjoyed watching it again. It was a trip down memory lane.

Nothing 'special' about this other than the packaging, but a great film nonetheless.

Dark Star is a must have for every John Carpenter fans. The DVD is presented in a nice carton package, with DD5.1 and enchanted for 16/9 with very nice menus for navigation. The sound is clear but a little muffled and the transfer right for that 70's movie. We can choose from the theatrical release or the extended version (a plus). Unfortunately, there almost no extras, that's a petty for a 30th anniversary release. I did like to have a audio commentary with one of the "students": John Carpenter or Dan O'Bannon or both.
