5.0 out of 5 stars A fun comic-book movie based shooter.
Okay, so it's been said that this is just another clone of a tired game engine, but I have to disagree.
It really captures the overall feel of the latter Punisher comic-books and the Tom Jane movie. It's definitely a challenge on later levels, and there is a host of other Marvel characters making an appearence in the game, including Bullseye, Kingpin, Nick Fury and...

For those who don't know, The Punisher is a "hero" from the Marvel universe who hunts down criminals with automatic weapons and a "No Prisoners" attitude.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun comic-book movie based shooter., 23 Jun 2005

Okay, so it's been said that this is just another clone of a tired game engine, but I have to disagree.
It really captures the overall feel of the latter Punisher comic-books and the Tom Jane movie. It's definitely a challenge on later levels, and there is a host of other Marvel characters making an appearence in the game, including Bullseye, Kingpin, Nick Fury and Ironman to name a few.
Also, there are plenty of goodies to unlock as you progress, including a huge gallery of Punisher comic-book covers, concept art for the game and a series of flashback images that you encounter during gameplay.
Overall, it's a must for Punisher fans, Marvel fans and anyone who just likes a good action game.

4.0 out of 5 stars If only the film was this good, 27 Mar 2005

If the film was half as good as this it may not have been such a bomb. Garth Ennis writes yet another superb Punisher story straight out of the pages from the original mini series through to the classic "Welcome Back Frank" story arc and others.
Playing this was as though I was reading the MARVEL MAX stories. Oh the gore, oh the legs flying everywhere, oh the fun

5.0 out of 5 stars Letting off steam, 8 Sep 2006
This review is from: The Punisher (PS2) (Video Game)
The first thing you notice about the Punisher on PS2 is how much it reminds you of the groundbreaking Max Payne of a few years back. The second is the new levels of brutality that gaming has gone to,in order to keep 'the kids' entertained.

But these are minor quibbles!

The Punisher is awesome, quite literally 100 times better than that AWFUL movie(10/10 for effort though)as you shoot, stab and kill your way through multiple levels of gameplay, with many recurring Marvel/Punisher supporting characters making cameo appearances.(I won't spoil them here though)

The real joy is just how amazingly unrestrained this game is in its depiction of the Punisher himself, brilliantly voiced in a deeper monotone,by the movies Thomas Jane, and in the violence he inflicts onthe thousands of scum who come crawling out the woodwork to meet their end at the Punishers hands. There is,I'm ashamed to admit,an almost perverse joy in a bad day at work, knowing you can come home and let off some steam, dishing out vitual vengeangce against CG scum.Or is that just me....

The game itself is a little simplistic for my taste, but really, thats what the Punisher is all about.Revenge and punishment by the simplest route possible.I even prefer this game to Garth Ennis' comic book,on which it is more closely based than the actual movie it ties in with.So if you've ever wanted to give a man a pavement sandwich, tape a grenade to a guys mouth, slam his head repeatedly in a fridge,or just plain feed him to the sharks, then this is the game for you!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Bloody brilliant!!!, 9 Mar 2006
This review is from: The Punisher (PS2) (Video Game)
Yeah, the film's OK....but the game's superb!
If you're after cute little characters and fluffy storylines then this ISN'T the game for you....but if brutal torture of criminals is your thing, as well as packing more firepower than you can shake a bloodstained stick at then you need to buy this!!!
Good sound, graphics and gameplay, along with some very imaginative uses for drills, piranha tanks and a zoo rhino!!!
The only downside is that, once you've gained information from a criminal, if you continue your torture to the point of killing him you LOSE points. I think this kind of goes against the title and premise of the game somehow.
Also once you've "persuaded" a baddie to talk by threatening to feed him feetfirst into a wood-chipping machine, if you then actually DO turn him into soil-enriching mulch the screen goes to black and white....despite being able to blow limbs and heads off in glorious (should that be gory-ous) technicolour in the normal course of the game!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Slightly difficult but still damn good, 10 April 2005

This is a fairly tricky game even on easy setting but that aside, I cant find any other faults with this game.
The voice of The Punisher is done by the same actor as the film (Tom Jane)
Being able to carry 2 guns at once is awsome, and the "interrogations" done Punisher style are excellent (although they are in black and white)
just have 2 words to sum up this game: BUY NOW!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best games I've played., 8 Feb 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: The Punisher (PS2) (Video Game)
First of all, a potential buyer should know that this game is very violent. At times, I had to look away. However, I still had a great time. Playing this is perhaps one of the best cathartic releases you can have: if you've had a tough day, throwing a smack-head through a high window and watching them plummet to the street below will put a smile on your face, as will lobbing grenades around a crack-den full of pathetic junkies.

The gameplay's fast and engaging, matched by a great plot and Tom Jane's perfect voiceover. There's also a ton of cameos from other Marvel characters, and plenty of replay value due to the tons of unlockables, challenge modes and various difficulty levels. Also, some levels demand to be replayed over and over - the jungle level (where Frank wears amazing skull face-paint) and the level at Stark Industries.

Very enjoyable. Highly recommended ... as long as you're old enough.

4.0 out of 5 stars Its not vengeance, its punishment!, 29 Mar 2005

A faithful reproduction of the Punisher series, although the game is closer to the original comics than the recent film.
Overall good gameplay, a decent array of weaponry and an adequate control system, although make sure there are no minors around as some of the "quick-kills" especially are extremely graphic (including throat-cutting).
All-in-all you could buy a lot worse.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping entertainment, 17 April 2005
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Punisher (PS2) (Video Game)
Although not as long as I had hoped (took approx 9hours to complete) this game had real replay value due to its upgrades, unlockables and mini-challenges. Make no mistake this isn't about wholesome family values, but thats what makes it so good. As 'The Punisher' you dispatch baddies in a variety of gory and occasionally amusing ways whilst utilishing the environment to make things a little more diverse, for example a personal favourite is throwing a man to the sharks. Each level is challenging and interesting taking you to a variety of locations and making you use skills that differ from the monotony of point and shoot. Another good point is the variety of weaponry avaliable and the realisic touch of only being able to carry a few guns at a time. A fantastic game that does justice to the original comic, worth a look.

For those who don't know, The Punisher is a "hero" from the Marvel universe who hunts down criminals with automatic weapons and a "No Prisoners" attitude.

Frank Castle was once a happy family man, but one unfortunate day in the park his family was gunned down by being in the crossfire of two mafia families. He was the only survivor and hunts them down for revenge.

As Frank Castle in this game you get to go through missions hunting down criminals in your standard 3rd person shooter, however you can also do things like torture criminals over certain points for interrorgating such as hanging them out a window or putting their face up close to a powered up saw-blade and even killing them after if you want.

You can unlock weapons to bring with you on missions by taking them home from the missions, much like Hitman: Blood Money.

I had fun with this game and the many creative interrorgation areas that you are able to use to coax confessions and information out of perps to hunt down prominant members of the mafia family and kill them.

A lot of fun, but not exactly a game I should say you should go out of your way for.
