5.0 out of 5 stars A Sexy and Seductive Thriller
You can just about forget everyone else in this film other than Debra Winger and Theresa Russell. This sexy film is basically a two person film noir shot in bright colors, some of it in Hawaii. It is filled with excitement and seduction. Both the leads are wonderful to watch, their chemistry magnificent in this Bob Rafelson (Man Trouble, Five Easy Pieces) film.

3.0 out of 5 stars Average Thriller
I remember this when it came out; monochromes and chilling music; acting and story were average.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Sexy and Seductive Thriller, 11 Jan. 2003

This review is from: Black Widow [VHS] (VHS Tape)
You can just about forget everyone else in this film other than Debra Winger and Theresa Russell. This sexy film is basically a two person film noir shot in bright colors, some of it in Hawaii. It is filled with excitement and seduction. Both the leads are wonderful to watch, their chemistry magnificent in this Bob Rafelson (Man Trouble, Five Easy Pieces) film.
Debra Winger is 'Alex' Barnes, bogged down in a government desk job dealing with statistics. But when she sees a pattern of deaths that lead to the icy beauty Theresa Russell she becomes obsessed with catching a killer. Theresa Russell, who has used more names than Jason Bourne, is just as smart as she is sexy, and almost the entire film is one long seduction scene as Russell spins her web around Alex.
It seems a lot of rich men have suddenly died on Russell and Alex knows why. She is what is called a "Black Widow", a woman who mates and then kills. No one has found any evidence to prove it however, and Alex's attempts to catch her at it becomes murky as a seduction begins to take place.
The locations and the stars are beautiful and as Winger and Russell circle each other in this game with deadly stakes you can't take your eyes off them. Winger's Alex is smart and determined, but vulnerable, and Russell gives a flawless and sexy performance as a smart and icy beauty with a heart full of venom.
The electricity between the two characters jumps off the screen. The pool scene where they first meet gives us an indication of what is to come as Alex attempts to get close to Russell, with some unexpected twists. The formost of these is a scene when Alex gives Russell a Black Widow pendant, a spider who mates and kills it's lover. Russells response, which includes her grabbing Alex and kissing her, plays with the fragile but determined Alex as she begins to doubt herself.
You don't want to miss this one. It's gorgeous to look at and has two riveting performances from Winger and Russell. You can't find a better one than this....

4.0 out of 5 stars Winger and Russell go head to head, 13 Jun. 2014

This review is from: Black Widow [DVD] (DVD)
This film really holds your attention, and is very entertaining, if not the noblest that cinema has produced. It plays on all that glamour of the Hitchcock style, with Theresa Russell showing icy panache in the enigmatic but monstrous lead as a woman who marries rich men and then bumps them off. A poolside party finds her sashaying in red with her long crimped hair to devastating effect. I notice Theresa Russell always has wonderful hair in her films - Track 29 also has impeccable styling in this sense. But this is not all, because she is a remarkable actress, every bit as good as any of Hitchcock's leads, in fact rather better than most at suggesting the depths of the character even if it's not really in the script. For a short time she seemed to be on the crest of a superb wave, when she also made Bad Timing with husband Nicolas Roeg. Here her casting opposite Debra Winger is inspired, Winger playing the FBI agent who becomes obsessed with unmasking her, and keen to save the life of her latest intended victim, who seems such a likeable man. She shows a touching vulnerability and the film explores her fascination with the Russell character, while evoking similar responses in the viewer. It has plenty of surprises, including a remarkable scuba-diving sequence, and it is adroitly shot: altogether a skilful piece of filmmaking, if ultimately too focused on the ride. As a genre film I'd give it five stars, but set against all films, four, because it lacks a real feeling of depth.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thriller meets dark movie, 4 Nov. 2001
This review is from: Black Widow [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is one of the best dark movies ever. A workaholic, intelligent FBI agent chasing a cold, tough, sexy killer around America. They are totally different, but when they finally meet attraction is powerful, and they play with each other before colliding. Debra Winger and Theresa Russel are absolutely fantastic. This is one of the best examples of 'intelligent'crime movies without shootings blow-ups and blood flood. You can watch it over and over, and it hardely gets boring. Pretty good photography too

This review is from: Black Widow [1987] [DVD] (DVD)
As a huge fan of horror films and thriller films, this film is an amazing brilliant film with two great actress's. It was a quick delivery which I eagerly waited for so I was gladly happy when I finally got to watch the brilliant film. Debra Winger portrays a hard-working detective hoping to leave her job which keeps her in an office and wants to be out hunting down the killers, so when wealthy men are found dead by this mysterious ondines curse it gives her the perfect excuse to get out of the office. But each man had a young beautiful wife who inherited all the money, this woman is a black widow a female serial killer, who marries the men she targets, mates then kills them for there estate and money. The black widow is played by Theresa Russel who is brilliant and thrilling in a sexy yet frightening way. Soon enough Debra finds herself in the black widows web of lies, sex, money and death.

5.0 out of 5 stars Five star movie, 30 Nov. 2014
This review is from: Black Widow [DVD] (DVD)
Two gorgeous women. One a fanatical, dedicated FBI agent, one a sexy serial killer are devastatingly attracted to each other as they play a fascinating game of cat and mouse. The on screen chemistry between Debra Winger as the FBI agent and Theresa Russell as the icy, lethal beauty is an experience to behold.

Great movie one you can watch over and over and never tire of it. Highly recommended.

A terrific film, with the very beautiful and very much underrated Theresa Russell. A tale of two women, a game of 'catch the baddie',tense, great plot, and a terrific ending.
