4.0 out of 5 stars Good Pool Movie
This movie will suit anyone who likes Pool or 9 ball.

The main character is a lifetime Pool hustler who is a real talent at the game. He tries working a real job but just can't leave the game behind.

A somewhat dated look at pool room hustling, look out for a cameo by Rodney Morris. The storyline gathers pace nicely culminating in the "big showdown"...

1.0 out of 5 stars If you buy this, you've been hustled
This film is dire. A single song used for the Sound Track that is Lockstock-esque and poor acting. Aside from Christopher Walken, the only interest is in some of the shots. Also, the pool games themselves were not realistic; you would make the games easy for yourself in real life, not play in 'exhibition mode'.

A somewhat dated look at pool room hustling, look out for a cameo by Rodney Morris. The storyline gathers pace nicely culminating in the "big showdown" between the main character and the skilled Pool shark. Perhaps the plot is predictable, hence the 4 star rating, but a pool enthusiast will enjoy it.

A nice supplement to the Color of Money, and much better than Stickmen.

2.0 out of 5 stars poolroom junkies, 18 Jun 2007

My overall opinion on this film is poor. This film has some similarities to the all time classic The Hustler with the main character with his girl who is not happy about johnny being a hustler(Paul Newman,Piper Laurie Similaritie?)The acting is OK but there is one scene where Johnny is playing pool in his girlfriends bosses house and he makes a great trick shot and he is wagered that he couldnt make the shot again in a million years(opening scene from the hustler)some good pool shots but if you want to buy a good film about pool hustling then buy the color of money or the hustler.

This film is incredible! I saw it in the US at the cinema back in February, and was disgusted to find that it never got a national cinema release over here! Crazy! It's incredible. A really intertaining, incredibly cool, well written film. The characters are very real. Think Swingers meets Hustler meets Rounders. Awesome.

4.0 out of 5 stars "The Hustler," Upgrade., 24 Nov 2012

POOLHALL JUNKIES demands the viewer be into the game known as Pool: i.e., 8-ball, 9-ball, straight and doubles. At first site, one may be forgiven for thinking well, so what. However, there is much more to the plot.
However, its downfall, for this disappointed 62-year old reviewer, being a pool aficionado, whilst enjoying the movie, was that many of the shots were glaringly illegal - in terms of the current internationally recognised rules. However, most of them were extraordinarily dazzling.
Nevertheless, there are real people-playing characters on board this dramatic, romantic and violent but darkly humorous presentation. Moreover, its redeeming features comprise an exceptional big gun cast - Mars Callahan, Chazz Palminteri, Rod Steiger and Christopher Walken; the superb script and the atmosphere - thus the four-star rating.
This reviewer's title to this assessment relates to the 1961, THE HUSTLER original that no doubt inspired this production: E.g. - One scene witnesses the anti-hero, "Fast" Eddie - as he entered the hall as it opened early one morning - saying to his hustling partner, "...Yeh, like a church." POOLHALL JUNKIES, in an early scene witnessing considerable banter and repartee among the hall denizens, deliver the phrase, "...now, it's as quiet as a church." This and similar script and plot parallels, defines the link between the two. Therefore, if you enjoyed the former, the latter is definitely for those looking for more of the same and, in my judgement, a superior creation.
its crowning glory is that, most importanly has a good ending.
