the cat and the canary is that rare film that keeps you on the edge of your seat. from the momement bob hope arrives at the old spooky house on an island enveloped in fog, you know things are seriously out of control. although this is a comedy, no one plays for laughs, not even bob hope.i seriously think he should have recieved an award for his performance.although the...

1.0 out of 5 stars orbit media should hang their head in shame!
One of Bob Hopes best films has been sadly disrespected by Orbit Medias dvd version of the cat and the canary. The picture quality is truly awful, and should be avoided.Hopefully another distributer will soon release this classic again and do it justice!

1.0 out of 5 stars Six (now seven) years later and still waiting for re-release. Woeful transfer., 5 April 2010
This review is from: The Cat and the Canary [DVD] [1939] (DVD)
Bought this when it first came out - only to end up returning it. My own transfer to DVD of an old VHS TV recording, is still better than this issue. I've money burning a hole in my pocket just waiting for a decent copy of this great film. (That also goes for I Married A Witch [DVD]. That transfer's worse, if possible.) Someone get a move on.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great film - poor print, 28 Jun. 2004
This review is from: The Cat and the Canary [DVD] [1939] (DVD)
The film is worth five stars but the terrible quality print is only worth one star. It looks like an off air recording on a VHS cassette that you have played a hundred times.
Still, Hope is very funny, Paulette Goddard is gorgeous, and Gale Sondergaard is spooky.

1.0 out of 5 stars The Cat and the Canary 1939, 23 Feb. 2011
This review is from: The Cat and the Canary [DVD] [1939] (DVD)
Have to agree with all the previous reviews regarding the appalling quality of this copy of a truly wonderful film. The film itself is one of the finest pieces of ensembled playing, (along with 'The Man Who Came to Dinner'), ever to come out of Hollywood; a perfect cast in every sense.

1.0 out of 5 stars Barely watchable, 19 Sept. 2006
This review is from: The Cat and the Canary [DVD] [1939] (DVD)
Caught up in rights problems in the US, it seemed like there was little chance of being able to see this film since Universal Studios were unable to release it. However, the people at public domain specialists Orbit Media have been able to somehow get around any problems, and put out a disc version that will please fans of the film who only want to listen to the soundtrack. Those who are able to see will be extremely disappointed - the picture is clearly sourced from an American VHS tape (zoom back on the picture and you can see the signs of VHS head-switching) and has no definition whatsoever. If your idea of a good time is to watch shapeless blobs moving around a screen, then this is the DVD for you. The film itself is deserving of the praise it receives (look at the comments of some of the other reviewers on Amazon - many who posted their comments before the disappointing disc was issued), so if you're really desperate to see it, then the best option is probably to give it a rental and to imagine you're watching it without glasses or contacts in.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rib-tickling suspense at its best!!, 7 Feb. 2004
This review is from: The Cat and the Canary [DVD] [1939] (DVD)
If your idea of the perfect film is to be laughing out loud one minute, then jumping behind the sofa, a chill running down your spine, the next, The Cat and the Canary is the film for you. Bob Hope has never been funnier, with some classic throw-away one-liners, and Paulette Goddard stunning as the damsel in distress (though it is more often Hope that is quivering in fear). The house and bayou scenery are eerie, the music spooky, and the baddy, or baddies, genuinely scary. One scene in particular, with Goddard being stalked down secret passageways is more frightening than anything from supposed horrors in the 1970's and 80's.
If you ever wondered where the writers of Scooby Doo got most of their ideas from, then look no further than this classic!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Insulting quality transfer. Avoid, 4 Nov. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Cat and the Canary [DVD] [1939] (DVD)
As the other reviewers have said, this is a classic and hilarious film that has been done a great diservice by the picture and sound quality on this DVD release. My old off air VHS that has been watched to death is in better shape. If this was priced at 50p, there wouldnt be such cause for complaint, but it isnt 50p. I couldnt make it through the DVD, the transfer is in such bad shape. It competely ruins what is a classic comedy film of its time.
Avoid this version, wait for a better one.

5.0 out of 5 stars CLASSSIC!, 9 Feb. 2004
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Cat and the Canary [DVD] [1939] (DVD)
I saw this when I was about 10, which means, errrrr, some 30+ years ago, and it scared the daylights out of me. Of course, I knew then it was a comedy and I realise know it was simply a very, very, funny spoof. Full of early, good Bob Hope gags and great situations, it may telegraph some of the plot lines but does it with terrific panache and humour. I'm hoping that time hasn't caused me to over-estimate it but I suspect not and I've already got my pre-order in.
