For those of you that know your heavy metal drummers, then the name Dave Lombarbo will probably be etched somewhere in your mind as one of the pivotal players of the metal genre over the past twenty years. Lombardo is best know for his work with American thrash band Slayer and has been quoted on numerous occasions as one of metals best drummers due to his technical dexterity between his hands and feet. With Grip Inc, Lombardo has joined forces with English vocalist Gus Chambers, German guitarist/producer Waldemar Sorychta and bassist Stuart Carruthers.

The sound of Grip Inc is an unusual beast, underpinning a thrashy type vibe, but primarily is more groove laden balancing the music out with plenty of melody as well as power. There is a strong emphasis on the bass here and the rest of the music travels along in unison to this instrument. There are some well-structured riffs and solos from Sorychta with his playing having an emotional edge to it, which is very gratifying to the ear. As for Lombardo, this man just exudes such raw talent and never fails to disappoint yet again. With Grip Inc, his drumming is not as thrash orientated as with Slayer, perhaps a more laid-back approach with plenty of different polyrhythms and in all likelihood this can probably be attributed to his Cuban roots.

Gus Chambers has a very unusual vocal delivery, which is a hybrid between punk rock and metal. He has a very clear precise voice that is slightly forced without being out of tune, but he does have a rasping shout and once you get over what his voice is about, then you find it is very well suited to the music. I have never heard of Chambers before prior to his involvement with Grip Inc, but looking at the promo picture of him on the album, I would say his roots are firmly entrenched in the punk-rock scene. I have all four Grip Inc albums in my collection, which are well written, played and the production is superb. So if you are looking for a band with a strong vibe, a carefree attitude that don't buck to trends, then check them out as they are a captivating band.
