This review is from: I'll Drown in My Tears (Audio CD)
Having heard that Lula Reed and Sonny Thompson had the original of the Ray Charles showstopper ''Drown In My Own Tears'', I was more than excited to check it out together with Lula's other work on King. It's a well researched compilation as one would expect from ACE,but.....
Her voice described as ''brittle'' in the liner notes,to me is off-key at times and lacking in real bluesy emotion. The backing by Sonny Thompsons Orchestra is OK but plods along on many of the slower numbers.Good guitar licks and his rolling piano style is nice. She could have benefited from better songwriting as most of the blues numbers seem to be derivatives of many of Big Maceos songs.(similar chord progressions and melody)
Disapointing and quite a chore listening to all 24 tracks.
For this type of 40s/50s female blues, big band stuff, far better to buy Little Esther with Johnny Otis,Dinah Washington,or Ruth Browns early Atlantic material.
