Cyndi grew up in Manhattan, which was (and probably still is) a melting pot, where music from a variety of sources could be heard within a very small area. Inevitably, these diverse influences shaped Cyndi's own musical career, but with this album she has returned to her roots and recorded a selection of the songs that she heard back then. The resulting album is very satisfying to my ears.

Most if not all of these songs were around in the sixties though some are older. There is a trio of songs of French origin (La vie en rose, If you go away, Hymn to love) and plenty of R+B (At last, Stay, Until you come back to me, My baby just cares for me, Don't let me be misunderstood). Of course, Glenn Miller had the original hit with At last, but Etta James made the song her own and I suspect Cyndi grew up with Etta's version. Cyndi recorded the Motown song You've really got a hold on me with just one musician (albeit he plays three instruments) so the way it appears here, it's not R+B, but I love it. Meanwhile Cyndi has turned On the sunny side of the street (which I normally come across on easy listening albums) into an R+B rocker. Cyndi didn't do anything surprising with Walk on by or Unchained melody, by they also sound great.

Some people don't like cover versions but I do, though of course there are exceptions. There are no exceptions here as Cyndi recorded a truly magnificent album.

I am absolutely astonished by ms. Cyndi Lauper's wonderful interpretations of these songs. She even made me love La vie en rose and unchained melody - songs I didn't appreciate much before, but she sings with such emotion, it's amazing.

This is a compilation of 'covers' from Cyndi Lauper - something only she and a handful of artistes are able to do really successfully. When someone sings such famous songs like 'La Vie En Rose' and convinces you that she was the first to record it, then that speaks for itself!

As the previous Reviewer has implied; this album will surprise many listeners of Cyndi's talent - but we already knew that Cyndi Lauper was a great and 'expensive' artiste. She's certainly a 'gutsy' lady to take on such classics with such confidence! There's only one song here that I really didn't like, but that's not her rendition, that's because I never liked the song anyway: 'Unchained Melody' and so I guess that doesn't really count... Beautiful songs here, and beautifully sung - 'If You Go Away' and 'Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood' being the real high points to this classic CD.

Cyndi Lauper is one of the very few Artistes I can tolerate singing covers - and that's coz they don't sound like it when she duz 'em! I've always said that there is always at least one 'zany' track included on any Cyndi Lauper album - and here it's 'On The Sunny Side Of The Street'!

The lady is a living legend!

"At Last" is the album that has finally made the masses realise what an incredible singer this woman is. I am known for being a huge fan and some of my friends dismiss her as a novelty act from the 80's. I have exposed them to this CD and the response has been universal. The main comment has been about what a wonderful singer she is and how surprised they are.
I host a program on a community radio station each week. I have been playing songs from "At Last" and the reaction has been amazing. When I played "Stay", I had people asking who it was singing (they loved it). Other presents who were at the station stopped talking and started listening, then singing. "Hymn to Love" garnered phone calls about what a beautiful song it was. In fact, each track has received a postive reaction.
The CD displays Cyndi vocal talents to the full. The musical arrangements are stripped back to basics (not overproduced thank goodness). Her voice is so full of emotion, I not only hear her sing the songs but I can feel her singing them.
Go and buy "At Last".
If you wonder where Cyndi has been since the 80's, go and purchase "Hat Full Of Stars" (1993), "Sisters Of Avalon" (1996) and "Shine" (2002). She has been producing fantastic music since the 80's. There just wasn't much publicity about it.

this is an album that proves that all along Cyndi was more than a manufactured pop singer in the early years. Showing the depth of voice and style that was always there on the early albums, this album is a record that says singer and songs don't need hype or over the top marketing. Record companies take note..stop wasting time on disposable rubbish and become more green and invest in renewable artists! The title track At Last, says it all, power and control and a song that sends goosebumps up the skin..this is a girl having fun with real music!

I am very late hearing this cd,ten years late ,boy am I glad ....I so wanted to love this album, as the Cyndi I love was full of fire ,gutsy and fun, this album in parts makes her voice sound weak reedy, squeaky and shows up the worst of her range.
The songs are all amazing choices but not for her,the Piaf tracks have no passion at all.I will put this on my i pod for background music but as an album of choice it's a big no! Sorry Cyndi! Mainstream is so not you!

At Last came as a surprise to her fans, her latest albums have been all self penned with each song carrying a clear message. It seems strange that she would conceive a Covers album with a new record deal.
These aren't so much covers as they are more interpretations of classics. The thing what makes this album stunning is the fact that her interpretations carry more emotion than the originals. Unchained Melody is sung with so much heartache you forget how the original was sung. The music arrangements could be better but the vocal arrangement is perfect. Walk On By is sung as though she is actually singing to an ex lover. The upbeat standout track Stay done with a latin beat sounds fresh and contains the sass of her earlier recordings.
I would strongly recommend this album if you like to chill out and have something playing in the background. If you possess any of her earlier work and appreciate her voice you will love this album because it is something you won't have heard Cyndi doing before a bit of an eye opener. Not what you would expect from Cyndi. But well worth a listen

'She's so unusual', and quite distinct from many other femmes. I was very pleased with this purchase although I am not generally a fan of cover albums.

I saw Cyndi live last year and her voice is really lovely and less squeaky than in the 80s.

I hope you enjoy this album as much as I do.

Sorry Cyndi. I have everything Ms. Lauper has recorded but the best thing about this is the divine picture of her. I struggled and could not find even one song that I would play again. Maybe I'm a pleb but I just found this collection of old songs so boring.

I grew up listening to Cyndi. I still have several of her albums. Every one must evolve and in many ways Cyndi has for the better. There is a major problem with this album however. A few songs that are classics and sung strait forward are executed very well by Cyndi. However others are experimental in nature and distort the original feel with extra warbling and la-di-dah. Of the ones that were not distorted and are classic, you find yourself saying "now who sings that?" instead of listening to Cyndi. "Walk on by" has someone making raspy sounds on the drum loud enough to make you stop and check for a flat tire.
She will challenge and maybe best the original with "Don't Let Me be misunderstood." I am proud of the fact she can sing in English regardless if it has a French title. And there is a pamphlet with the explanation of her strange mix of songs in this album.
