4.0 out of 5 stars Thomas live in 2001, 13 Jan 2005
This review is from: Forty (Audio CD)
A short but sweet revival of the recording career of Thomas Morgan Robertson, aka Thomas Dolby.
as the title suggests, this CD emerged from the 40th birthday performances that Thomas gave in 2001.
Allowing for the near 10 year gap since Thomas's last pop song centred performances, both the songs and the vocals had stood the test of time.
Forty : Live is a brief (just 7 songs, barely 40 minutes of music) revisit of Thomas's excellent back catalogue, played by Thomas, and guests Brian Salter on keyboards and electronic wind instrument, Caroline Lavelle on cello and b/vox, and Leslie Adams on b/box.
If you know Thomas's music, then these 7 songs are probably in your ultimate Thomas top 10; the only one I would quibble would be I Scare Myself, as Thomas has written many fabulous songs, but this cover of Dan Hicks songs is an integral part of The Flat Earth, and also works perfectly in this setting.
Thomas's voice is not quite as strong as it was, but gives some of these performances an added maturity that the lyrics deserve; Screen Kiss sounds even more poignant than the The Flat Earth, if that were possible, One Of Our Submarines again grows from Thomas's maturity.
If you have any of Thomas's previous output, you will get something again from this.
Seems unlikely we will ever see new music from Thomas, but this is apt way to round off a near flawless recording career. OK I forgot about Howard the Duck :)
The one irony for me: I bought this in Florida, as Forty : Live was not released in the UK - a little sticker on the back declared 'MADE IN ENGLAND'... was this the CD, or the thoughts behind the contents of the CD!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hurrah ! at last a new album from TMDR!, 30 Dec 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Forty (Audio CD)
I bought this from CDBABY when it first came out a couple of years back and lost myself in it for days.
This is that rare thing: An album in part retrospective and in part futuristic.
You have the sense that there is some looking back to what was and some looking forward to what might be in the future.
Similarly its live but its also a very intimate kind of live.
The type of live that draws you in and holds you. Not like those live stadium albums of the 80's.
There is nothing anonymous about this record. Consequently its a very honest and at time a very touching record.
Thomas Dolby just oozes talent both as a songwriter and as a producer and this album makes it all sound so effortless and easy.
I'm really looking forward to him writing some new material and releasing it via the net.
What a great suprise finding this album was.
Intimate and essential!
