This review is from: Ny Muscle (Audio CD)
"Dance music" (for want of a better term) has barely moved on in the decade since Hell released N.Y. Muscle - his 3rd solo album - back in 2003. Consequently, it still sounds terrific.

Produced in collaboration with the insanely prolific Abe Duque, Hell ropes in Alan Vega (twice!), Billie Ray Martin, James Murphy & Erlend Oye for vocal cameos, extracts tantilising samples from a bunch of mystifyingly obscure early 80s electronic tracks (often uncredited, & with surface noise intact), & turns up the darkness to 11. The results are ominous, oppressive, & curiously timeless. Substituting melody with a selection of creaks, hisses & bleeps, it's often left to the guest vocalists, & the relentless pounding percussion, to drive these tracks - custom built for early hours' dance floor stragglers, punishing brute force laying waste to the fashionista waifs & strays.

Despite a plethora of subsequent remixes, it's the original N.Y. Muscle versions that you need to hear.
