The comedy is loud, frenetic and silly (it's Johnny Lever, you have been warned!), some of the filming style is dated and the villains are straight from the pantomime but who cares when you are swept away by the romance and music of this classic Bollywood film?

Aamir Khan totally inhabits the character of the endearingly naive but short-tempered, country taxi driver Raja, and Karishma Kapoor, with her hour-glass figure and shining eyes, is perfect as the innocent rich, city girl Aarti, initially oblivious to their growing love. The romance and comedy of the first half of the film, with this adorable young couple finding love while struggling to understand each other's differing attitudes and values, gives way to pure melodrama in the second half as Raja and Aarti are separated by her dastardly relations. The final climax is a jaw-dropping fight sequence.

One of the keys to the film's appeal for me is the character of Raja. Surely the pride of a poor man has never been more sympathetically portrayed. Yes, Raja is hotheaded and touchy but when his pride is contrasted with the empty vanity of Aarti's rich city relations, you understand it and side with him.

Add to this some of the most haunting songs ever written (why oh why is the music not available online? edited to say that at last the music is available online) and the most scandalously passionate kiss ever filmed in Bollywood, and you'll see why this film just sweeps you away.

4.0 out of 5 stars Conniving uncle, wicked stepmother and love across the social class divide, 21 Jan. 2009
By
This review is from: Raja Hindustani [DVD] (DVD)
This movie is about a conniving uncle, wicked stepmother, misunderstandings through deception and love across the social class divide... and a proud headstrong lover who is his own worst enemy.
Here we have all the ingredients of Bollywood romance and melodrama. You are carried by the romance and your emotions manipulated by the deceptions. In short this is the sort of story Bollywood loves and does well. It is part fairy tale and part morality play.
There is also the fight scene (Aamir seems to have done few movies without one!)
Aamir Khan is a handsome youth in this movie (it was in the late 90s). He is not just a pretty face and a scene stealer but a fine actor. The movie is almost worth watching just for him.
Karisma Kapoor is also very good, as are the supports - though wicked uncle and stepmother are very much characatures. The chemistry between the lovers is good too.
There is some good music of the more sweeping haunting variety rather than Bhangra upbeat. Also a few good dance sequences.
This movie is a little dated in the film quality etc but as much of it is spent in beautiful mountain scenery in traditional clothes that are timeless it has stood the test of time well- and still seems to be loved by many.
If you love romance or classic Bollywood this is definitely recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Top Bollywood Film, 21 April 2006

(VINE VOICE)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Raja Hindustani [DVD] (DVD)
"Raja Hindustani" is an impressive film in almost all respects. The songs ,choreography and costumes are superb and the acting is excellent, especially the performances of Aamir Khan as Raja and the delectable Karisma Kapoor as Aarti. The storyline is well developed. It starts off light-hearted and frothy ,but when the romance between the rich Mumbai heiress and the poor village taxi driver hits the rocks, following some nasty, manipulative scheming by Aarti's sly stepmother and her avaricious uncle, the mood of the film turns serious and the tension escalates to an exciting and dramatic finale. "Raja Hindustani" is a sort of modern day Indian fairy-tale with more than a hint of "Snow White" about it . It is an enjoyable and entertaining viewing spectacle , although the three hour running time is somewhat excessive!

This review is from: Raja Hindustani [DVD] (DVD)
I love this film,it flows very nicely, and the music is superb..pardesi jana nahin forever, and I was lead to believe no other indian film could compete on the music front, and have yet to be proven wrong.I was very lucky to have this film as my first intro to bollywood, but it's almost too good an intro...
