5.0 out of 5 stars The live experience just got better
For anyone unlucky enough not to catch the 'Growing Up live' tour... Watch this DVD and you'll probably end up slaping yourself with the case for missing it. For those of you who did catch it get ready to experience the event up close!
The set list largely remains the same (some people got a few alterations at their live shows) and thankfully keeps the stunning...

2.0 out of 5 stars Average show
I saw this show twice and if you had nothing to compare it to, you'd think it was pretty good. Don't even think about buying this, though, until you've got Secret World - Live. It is so much better than this it's hard to realise it's the same performer.

5.0 out of 5 stars The live experience just got better, 16 Oct 2003
This review is from: Peter Gabriel - Growing Up Live [DVD] [2003] (DVD)
For anyone unlucky enough not to catch the 'Growing Up live' tour... Watch this DVD and you'll probably end up slaping yourself with the case for missing it. For those of you who did catch it get ready to experience the event up close!
The set list largely remains the same (some people got a few alterations at their live shows) and thankfully keeps the stunning opening track 'here comes the flood' and the quiet closing of 'father son'. Fan's of Gabriel's 'Secret World Live' will be glad to know that the visuals are far better than it's prediccessor and that the sound quality is still of the highest standard.
Peter always looks at home on the stage and his preformance is nothing short of his best. Their are few artists out their who sound as good live as they do in the studio and Peter is certainly one of them.
The big question is - will their be a live album to support the DVD? Again fans of 'Secret World Live' will have the live album close to the CD player just as I do. We can hope!!
In short, after almost a decade of being away from the world stage 'Growing Up Live' just shows that even in his Fifties Gabriel still remains as cutting edge as ever. This is the perfect addition to any fans collection.

This review is from: Peter Gabriel - Growing Up Live [DVD] [2003] (DVD)
Peter gabriel has always taken time over his music. I was lucky enough to caatch this show 'In The Round' (circular moving stage) at Wembley in 2003 - Does this DVD do it justice?
THE DVD (131 Minutes)
The disc loads quickly, and has a simple and effective set of selection screens. The set includes a few old favourite such as Red Rain, Mercy Street, Solsbury Hill (performed by PG while riding a bike around the stage).
The first number starts with PG on his own playing a stripped down keyboard version of 'Here Comes The Flood' to great effect.
AUDIO:
It's at these quiet moments that you realise just how good the audio is. You really do need to pump this disc through Digital Surround system. PG used his Real World recording Studios for editing the disc. The result - a powerfully immersive and crystal clear audio production.
VIDEO:
The live shows utilised digital realtime video editing, and all that footage (the show on the disc is from one show in Milan, and not spliced with an assortment of different shows)provides both intimate on and under stage clips, and 'in the gods' boom mounted clips with 360 degree rotating capabilites.
The colour is very good rich with dense blacks. The momentum of the whole gig has been caught beautifully in all its full-on digital, multi-media glory.
If you liked Previous Gabriel gig video (Secret World Tour) you will definately enjoy this more...unless of course you don't like the new album.
THE PLAYERS:
Very accomplished, very professional, they all look like they are having a ball.
No tantrums, no attitude, no bum notes.
EXTRAS:
The story of Growing Up, Tony Levins tour photos, Noodle: Mac OSX, and Windows interactive special.
Gabriel continues to show how it should be done with this live DVD. Own it.

If you liked PG's last live DVD (Secret World), you'll love this one. If you have'nt seen the Secret World DVD, buy it along with this DVD and double your pleasure. If you saw the recent PG "Growing Up" tour, this DVD will give you all the awesome experiences from the concerts...plus much more. There are 10 years between these two live shows but this DVD demonstrates that PG hasn't lost any of his energy, creativness, orginality or sense of fun. Great songs, great musicians, fantastic stage show, fantastic sound, excellent production. OH..... and the best packaging I've come across for a DVD of any genre. Satisfaction guaranteed!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Good & Bad of it..., 8 Nov 2003

This review is from: Peter Gabriel - Growing Up Live [DVD] [2003] (DVD)
I didn't get to see the Growing Up Tour live. Boy does the DVD make me jealous of those who did !!
*The Good: The setlist / The Lighting / The Direction (Hamish Hamilton deserves some sort of large golden medal for this one) / The Sound / The Atmosphere (thanks to a great crowd) / The Band (so Good!) / The technical aspects of the show are done with expert precision and to maximum effect / Amazing songs /
This is truly musical theatre. The addition of elements such as the Zorb and the Light Jacket and the expert delivery of every song further cements this as one of the tours sure to be remembered for a long time.
*The Bad: The show had to end
Bottom line : See this DVD and see it with some Volume, it is by far my favourite !!

5.0 out of 5 stars Magic, 24 Dec 2003
This review is from: Peter Gabriel - Growing Up Live [DVD] [2003] (DVD)
When I read the other reviews concerning this DVD I was a keen to purchase this, and it's the best cash I've spent for a long time. It really feels as if you're in this gig which is based in Milan.
Gabriel opens up with ''Here comes the Flood'', a nice solo piece -- and then it begins !! -- Overdrive !! The gig just gets better and better.
If you haven't bought this DVD then I suggest you dig deep in your wallet and enjoy this one for many years to come .

5.0 out of 5 stars less is more, 11 Nov 2005

This review is from: Peter Gabriel - Growing Up Live [DVD] [2003] (DVD)
i really can't recommend this DVD highly enough. the audio and visuals are a textbook example of just what DVD technology is capable of.. regardless of whether you're a fan of P.G. or not you're sure to find something here that will interest you.
PG's voice has improved with age - there's a melancholic, soulful edge to his delivery now and on some of the slower material here [flood, father son] it really is very moving indeed.
the mechanics of the show are fascinating to watch - i enjoyed seeing the 'orange' men at work in the split screen. to me it made sense given the theme of the show [and PG's explaination of Downside Up]. amazing use of technology which manages never to overwhelm the music, just enhance it. also, for such a big production on the stage, the music is actually quite sparse, with the musicians playing very economically - less is truly more in this instance. it leaves an eerie breathing space when you're listening which is a delight. so if you're a fan of flashy guitar solos you might be disappointed!
and if i haven't convinced you yet, just get the DVD for the Blind Boys of Alabama at the end of Blue Sky. i defy you not to be moved.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb document of an extraordinary show, 5 Nov 2003
By
This review is from: Peter Gabriel - Growing Up Live [DVD] [2003] (DVD)
The Growing Up Live tour was quite an experience. Gabriel is older, balder and a little tubbier than when we last saw him almost ten years ago on stage, but the Growing Up show is the most ambitious and breath-taking show he has put on.
This DVD is a high quality production - the DTS soundtrack in particular is quite excellent, and the production standards are much higher than the Secret World DVD. Inevitably, for those who went to see the shows, the film doesn't quite convey just quite how extraordinary they were - you rather lose sight of the fact the stage was constantly revolving for example and a tv screen can never do justice to the fabulous light show. Nevertheless, this is an excellent concert film, a must for fans and well worth repeated viewings.
Highly recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars Gabriel does it again, 5 April 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Peter Gabriel - Growing Up Live [DVD] [2003] (DVD)
A spectacular dvd that allows those lucky one's among us, who made it to one of the gigs, to relive an excellent event and for others to catch just a glimpse of what it was like.
The picture is gloriously accurate and really shows off the advantages of the dvd medium. With subtle editing and additional effects only increasing the spectacle of the original production, whilst still allowing you to get thouroughly involved.
Apart from, that is, the amazing sequence of 'The Barry Williams Show' which although it makes use of some stunning and visually complicated effects does not detract from the music as it simply acts to heighten the message of what Gabriel is singing.
Audio is as good as you would expect from a Real World production and I recommend 5.1 and loud for this experience so warn the neighbours.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth the 10 year wait, 2 Nov 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Peter Gabriel - Growing Up Live [DVD] [2003] (DVD)
Gabriel's music has the power to shock, please, enthrall, unsettle and thrill - but above all, his music makes you realise that it is possible to be on your feet WITH your brain in gear, and not just jigging to mind-numbing rhythms. His introduction to 'The Barry Williams Show' defines our culture in terms of having moved on from the days of 'We are what we eat' to the current truth of 'We are what we watch'. This doesn't stop you being excited by the music itself, but (as with so much of Gabriel's music), it leaves a significant part of you feeling seriously unsettled by what he says with his lyrics. Few musicians have such power to challenge and charm in the same instant. Ten years was an awfully long time to wait, but it was well worth it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Peter goes all spinal tap!, 3 Feb 2008
This review is from: Peter Gabriel - Growing Up Live [DVD] [2003] (DVD)
This is a great DVD - good range of songs and supported by the band brilliantly. Production values are as high as you would expect from PG although there are moments where things get taken too seriously and it all seems a bit "Spinal tap" - especially the giant ball and the anecdote about making music with monkeys ( probably not the Dolenz type). Like so many musicians, PG does take himself too seriously on occasion but nevertheless this is a recommended purchase!
