4.0 out of 5 stars A treasure trove of hidden gems, 29 April 2005

I picked this up as I like the original bands (strokes, galaxie 500) and the arists performing the covers (british sea power, belle & sebasian, Elizabeth Fraser). It is an excellent compilation. The BSP track is nearly indistinguishable from the original and very well done. Sadly the B&S track is absolute pants! (hence only 4 stars) another reason to get it if you thought they were incapable of bad tunes. Liz Fraser delivers a haunting version of 'At Last I am free'; 'Part Time Punks' and 'Fa Ce La' is excellent knockabout stuff. Buy it, you won't regret it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Something old, something new, something borrowed..., 4 Feb 2004
This review is from: Stop Me If You Think That You've Heard This One Before (Audio CD)
The record label that brought us The Smiths has released this CD to celebrate their 25th birthday. SMIYTYHTOB (snappy eh?) is a collection of current Rough Trade bands covering old Rough Trade tracks, not one dodgy track and reasonably priced.
A few of the bands you’ll have heard of; Belle & Sebastian, and British Sea Power are probably the most ‘well known,’ and both bands offer good tunes here, there are two Strokes covers, and even if you don’t like the Strokes, you might like these.
However the real delights of this CD are the bands that you probably don’t know about yet; The Mystic Chords Of Memory, Alasdair Roberts, and The Veils (tipped for 2004 by several newspapers), all stand out as talented bands which we will be hearing more from soon.
I’d recommend this CD to anyone who likes the less commercial side of ‘indie/pop/rock,’ or anyone who is interested in discovering musical talents. This CD is fresh, creative, and exiting; a real treat Enjoy!
