5.0 out of 5 stars What's in a Nursing Home Cake?, 14 Feb. 2009

This review is from: How to enjoy your operation (Hardcover)
I came across this book when a boy and libraries were not instructed to cull their collections of humour that was not "meaningful". The book is very much of its time, however the experiences of Man when at his most vulnerable, when under the iron Rule of Sister and Nurse (even pretty pretty Nursie Pursie) haven't changed.
I have no doubt that this book with its delightful illustrations by the underrated John Jenkin (especially the Sharing of Symptoms) will make buyers laugh out loud as much as it made me. It is a tonic to the melancholic and should be reissued as a "Classic British Humour" title.
It is a welcome reminder of a gentler time.
May "the piece of Cod that passeth all understanding" enlighten everyone's day.

I read the book many years ago and bought it again to read whilst in hospital. It had me in stitches even before the surgeon did. A very funny book, guaranteed to make you laugh out loud, especially if you are in or have been in hospital, as Vivian Ellis clearly has.
