Silly idea - don't bother - doesn't work
on 20 February 2015
Don't bother. I bought mine from John Lewis as I was concerned about fakes. It took 5 minutes for it to even start changing colour and by then they were hard boiled! Also - what a pain! Standing over a pan of boiling water watching something the whole time, not to mention the hazard of hot steam and the risk of getting a stiff neck or knocking the pan over. I'm going back to using the countdown timer on my phone - much better. Set it for three and a half minutes for a runny egg and it beeps when it's ready - very accurate. I prefer 4 minutes so it is slightly runny but the yolk is on the way to getting firmer. Four minutes is supposed to be the minimum safety time for eggs, but we find three and a half minutes is fine and all eggs are lion=marked these days as tested for salmonella anyway so I reckon the risk at three and a half minutes is non existant. While my phone timer is running down I can do something else and just wait for the noise! Very disappointed as I loved the idea, but at the end of the day boiling an egg really isn't that difficult. Make sure water is boiling hard and fast, have timer set up ready to hit 'go' as soon as you pop the eggs in, put a lid half on the pan to keep the water at full boil. Three and a half minutes for a runny yolk (the white is cooked through), 4 minutes for a medium egg, 5 minutes for a hard boiled one. Sorted. I thought our little boy might like this but no way was I having him near a pan of boiling water to watch the colour change! Silly idea - I don't know what possessed me.
