5.0 out of 5 stars So long the Path, 16 Nov 2003

This review is from: Heart on Snow [Limited Edition] (Audio CD)
While this is a radical departure from his more recent studio albums and many miles from the Soft Cell material, Heart on Snow is the culmination of several years travelling, singing and discovery in Russia for Marc Almond. He duets on this album with some of the greatest Romance singers of the last century (in some cases he is the first western artist to do this) and he is supremely confident, catching the spirit of the songs perfectly.Vocally, his work has rarely been stronger and this brave, uncommercial recording sets him up where he belongs as one of the greatest visionary singers of our generation.
I have seldom been moved to tears by an album - but this touches the heart with a depth and purpose seldom found these days. Marc Almond is a unique artist and has struggled to find his identity in the past. It is here, it is now. This is a magnificent gesture (though not in the theatrical sense of some of his earlier work) beautifully performed and packaged, quieitly understated and very, very different. Echoes of Absinthe and Jacques of course - but aren't those two also considered by fans his most interesting work? If you ever wondered what Marc Almond was up to and what he's all about, buy this album - there is sure to be more. Time will reveal this man's true genius.

5.0 out of 5 stars Winter Warmer, 13 Nov 2003

From the opening choral segment that introduces the plaintive vocals, Marc Almond proves that his unique voice remains in fine fettle. This is an album that is a radical departure from the recent Soft Cell disc. But to anyone that has follwed Marc's work, there is a clear link here to some earlier albums - Mother Fist, Jacques etc.
This probably isn't what you'd point a first time Marc Almond buyer towards, but anyone who feels at home with a lush musical landscape and some delicate but heartfelt lyrics should be adding this to their shopping list.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very important album, 16 Nov 2005

This review is from: Heart on Snow [Limited Edition] (Audio CD)
This album is Marc's most uncommercial one for many years. It took a long time to record ( by now, I think that's a leit-motiv in Marc Almond's career...) and what was originally conceived as a single album ended up being a double one.
The collection of Russian artists involved is a discovery for us Occidental listeners, and a very interesting one, I have to say: Alla Bayanova sounds like a French chanson singer, and so do her songs; the singer on "Strange feeling"(Sergey something...) has a fantastic and unusual voice...and these two are not the only remarkable singers.
"Heart on Snow" belongs to Marc's group of "difficult" albums, together with "Torment +Toreros", "Mother Fist" and maybe "Open all night"- those with a global sound to them and prefered by fans and critics though possibly not by the general public.
In this particular case, only a couple songs are written by Marc himself( the rest are traditional Russian songs ) out of which "Gone but not forgotten" stands out as a heartbreaking beautiful one: it perfectly reflects that struggle and sadness so present in Russia's XX Century history.
Overall, a fantastic album, full of sentimental songs, sang with great emotion but...beware!!...this is not pop music.
