5.0 out of 5 stars Choirs of the Eye, 30 Jan 2007
This review is from: Choirs of the Eye (Audio CD)
For those not familiar with Kayo Dot, they are a band who's unique brand of music seamlessly flows through a variation of styles, timbres, dynamics and harmonic ideas to produce an unmatched spectrum of soundscapes and emotions. Their sound includes a range of musical styles, from the folky strums of an acoustic guitar accompanied by Driver's soft falsetto voice, a much more dense, classical style of composition, the improvisation of a variety of wind and brass instruments and, to compare quite vastly, extreme metal.

For those familiar with the more recent full length release; "Dowsing Anemone With Copper Tongue", this record surpasses the aforementioned album in terms of intensity, variation and, in many respects, accessiblity. It's definitely the heavier of the two albums and portrays the more aggressive side of Toby Driver and Kayo Dot, but delivers just as much melody and sensitivity as "DAWCT" does in its soft/clean passages.

"Choirs of the Eye" displays their ability to juxtapose relentless dischordance through heavily distorted guitars, viracious drumming and screaching vocals with down-tempo, soothing and inspiringly beautiful melodic sections, and the result is completly mesmerising. This is one of the most unique and captivating albums that I've ever heard. There is an endless amount to discover here and every listen condures new emotions and ideas in the listener.

In short, Kayo Dot express, melancholy, ecstasy, obscurity, order and chaos, yet this album proves that they can show off the most impressive array of talents whilst maintaining a recognisable and approachable style.

This band/album is amazing.
