5.0 out of 5 stars Gettin' down just for the funk of it, 15 July 2004
This review is from: Under A Groove (Audio CD)
I wanted to get One Nation Under a Groove, but when I noticed that this box set was made up of four Funkadelic albums from the late 70s/early 80s, I got that instead.
Disc 1 contains One Nation and is absolutely essential. Perhaps the finest party album, and very different from earlier records such as Maggot Brain. Kicking off with the ubiquitous title track, which I'm sure gets sampled in modern hip-hop/r&b more than is healthy, the album rides a funky rollercoaster through to the epic guitar workout that Maggot Brain (Live) is always going to be. Highlights include Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad and an instrumental version of the same track, as well as mellower moments like Grooveallegiance.
Disc 2 contains 1976's Hard Jollies, a slightly unfocused album, although lots of fun. It also features the Uncle Jam Wants You album from 1979, and the fantastic Freak of The Week/ (Not Just)Knee Deepfunk work outs which are hilarious and scatalogical grroves that allow the band to show off their chops.
Disc 3 contains Electric Spanking of War Babies from 1981. This is the last Funkadelic album and is essential for that reason alone. However, with songs like the title track, Icka Prick, Electric Cuties and Funk Gets STronger Parts 1 & 2, it shows that Funkadelic had lost none of the magic.
Hip-hop in its early form, i.e. human beatbox, turntables, microphones etc. detracted from Funkadelic. The musicbecame stark, stripped down and Funkadelic's lavish rock/funk/jazz/psychedelia thang became overlooked. Fortunately, with bands like OutKast and Dungeon Family reviving an interest in psychedelic hip-hop, perhaps Funkadelic may get the opportunity to shine again.
In the meantime, buy this box as it contains four of the most exciting albums you're likely to hear.

This is a really good value collection of Funkadelic's output. All my vinyl has been out of commission for too long; listening to these CDs was like stepping into a pair of comfy slippers. Platform, spangled dancing slippers, maybe, but as well-fitting as ever.

Prompt delivery and fine packing. May the funk be with you.
