5.0 out of 5 stars Breathtakingly beautiful 2nd piano concerto, slow movement, 12 Nov 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Shostakovich - Complete Violin,Cello & Piano Concertos / 3CD Set (Audio CD)
I bought this box set mainly for the very romantic slow movement of 2nd piano concerto played by Ortiz. I have heard almost all recordings of this concerto available, but this one stands out because of the breath-takingly beautiful rendering of the slow movement which is really slow, 7:30, while most of other pianists play this movement too fast. Ortiz brings out every nuance and shade with sensitivity expressing deep longing of the music. As far as 2nd movement is concerned, this is the best.
Other concertos are also first class performance, especially 1st violin concerto is very good.

5.0 out of 5 stars A desirable collection, 28 Feb 2014
This review is from: Shostakovich - Complete Violin,Cello & Piano Concertos / 3CD Set (Audio CD)
All are very fine performances in the best richly recorded Philips digital sound. Mullova in the first with the RPO and Previn and Kremer in the second violin concerto with Ozawa in Boston are superb. Schiff gives powerfully projected readings of both cello concertos conducted with authority by Maxim Shostakovich and finely supported by the Bavarian Radio symphony Orchestra. Peter Jablonski gives a very good performance of the first piano concerto with the RPO under Ashkenazy.

However, I've saved the best to last. Christina Ortiz previously recorded a passionate account of the second piano concerto with Berglund and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, which I have admired since it was first issued, but this later digital version, in partnership with Ashkenazy conducting the RPO, is a more vividly projected performance in far richer sound, and is crowned by the most intensely beautiful account of the slow movement that I know of.

A generous set. Not only the music is very accessible, compared to a lot of other 20th Century classical music, the performances are very good. It's also nice to have all of the concertos in one set. My favourite is the cello concerto No.1 ... Brilliant!

I bought this with a bit of a 'well, let's see how it goes' attitude and have been very pleasantly suprised. Good performances covering well the hugh variety that is the Shostakovich repetoire. Recommend!

5.0 out of 5 stars L'integrale di concerti di Shostakovich, 24 Jan 2010
This review is from: Shostakovich - Complete Violin,Cello & Piano Concertos / 3CD Set (Audio CD)
Decisamente raccomandabile.
