5.0 out of 5 stars Technical Ecstacy!!!!, 7 Nov 2003
This review is from: Effigy Of The Forgotten/Pierced From? (Audio CD)
Along with Death, Cynic, and Atheist, Suffocation were among the first few bands to add technicality to death metal. While some bands were deemed to get less heavy disproportionally to the technicality, Suffocation retained their brutality and have remained as heavy as they've always been. This two CD pack 'Effigy Of The Forgotten' followed, not by its natural successor 'Breeding The Spawn' but with the almost Jazz fused 'Pierced from within.' 'Effigy...' is by far the best disc, verging on classic status with 'Pierced' being just a great tech death album. Well worth the cash!

Extreme in their construction, clinical in their execution. Long Island's Suffocation reached for unimaginable states of technical death metal ecstacy. Their a heavy kinda band from Long Island, a bit like V.O.D. Both their albums "Effigy of the Forgotten" & "Pierced From Within" are two great CD's, for a part in Roadrunner Records ongoing Two From the Vault series.
Let's just focus on them on, hmmm?
Efiggy of the Forgotten was released in 1991, in the year i was born.(Quite cool) Suffocation when i first heard them were just a joke i thought, but got both their albums off amazon.co.uk, the songs though are gruesome and leave you exhausted, recorded at Morrisound Recording in Tampa, FL, "Liege of Inveracity", the title track, "Infecting the Crypts", "Habitual Infamy" and "Mass Obliteration" were all great songs and the vocals of Frank Mullen are near enough like Obituary's (you can't make out a word!!) the other songs "Reincremation" and "Jesus Wept" are O.K songs, but altogether it was Suffocation's finest hour.
"Pierced From Within" is an underrated but bright album, Dom from Kerrang! said this was nowhere near as good as "Effigy..", but i disagree totally!(I think it's a midi kinda album) the title track and "Thrones of Blood", "Suspended in Tribulation", "The Invoking" and "Synthetically Revived" are the ones who cancell out the negative songs, another good show-stopper "Breeding The Spawn" was a look ahead to when they released that album.(Suffocation are another one of those bands who say that tracks 2 and 7 are the best.)
So get this my fellow Death Metal fans, an under-par Suffocation still make mincemeat out of people's bowels for everyone...BUY THIS!!
To my friends, FIE YE DI'EN!!
