I have just upgraded from Autoroute 2001 to Autoroute 2004 in order to get the benefit of new road information not included in my previous version.
To my astonoishment, on installing Autoroute 2004, I found that most of the roads I was hoping would now be included were not there. This included the new M6 toll (yes, the one that has been under construction for the last 3 years and opened at the end of 2003!!) and a number of significant new road and residential developments in my local area. There is a small amount of additional information and more post codes found that were not previously but not worth upgrading for. The look and feel of the software is almost identical to Autoroute 2001 (and presumably 2002 & 2003) with no significant change of functionality other than some new GPS related gizmo's I don't use.

Having waited to upgrade since 2002 with some major new road developments I was very disappointed to find that not only had two upgrades to the A6 in the Midlands not been included which opened in Q4 of 2003 but that the link between the M1 and the M40 in Northamptonshire was not fully included which opened in Q3 of 2002!
Others have noted that the M6 Toll isnot included but as this opened after the publication date of September 2003 thi8s is forgivable. The otehr ommisions are not. Don't buy it if you want the most up to date mapping. Only buy it if you have routing software that is 2000 or older as this it the only age at which you will really benefit.
Aside form this the usual features of all the attractions and address finding etc is ecellent and the ability to integrate with other Office products is also useful.

I have heard these comments on many occasions and even made them to MS myself. They do not even reply. As has already been mentioned WHY is there no M6 relief road and the thing that concerns me is what other roads are missing. I know of one bypass that was FINISHED three years ago and it is still not on it. I would prefer to pay a bit more than have something that is not up to date - it is after all AutoRoute 2004 - I feel it is just an excuse to get money every year. Why is it not possible to download updated roads and details?
Gripe over.

I have been using the AutoRoute products since they were taken over from NextBase, having dutifully purchased each new upgrade. This will be the last! Over the years we have seen the product getting less and less reliable. To be routed through France when wanting to travel along the South coast of England. To be routed around Ireland when wishing to travel from Dublin to Sligo, are just two of the many routing problems. The Ski lodges and resorts that don't appear in Europe? The programme which only came out a couple of months ago Microsoft is saying that wait for the next update in 2005 when the faults will be rectified. They said the same with the 2003 version.
Sorry - thumbs down for this one!!!

I have been buying Autoroute since it's birth in NextBase.
And in common with other reviewers I have have been disappointed with Microsoft's 'advancement' of the product each year.
And as a frequent traveller to Central Europe I was shocked to find that the 2003 version removed all roads from these countries. RETROGRADE, and deserved a price CUT.
Owners of earlier versions may also remember the embedded tourist guides, with photos, sounds and even panoramic interactive views. GONE.
Also the very responsive audio phrasebooks. These are still there but now you have to wait for Internet Explorer to be loaded, and then MediaPlayer. TEDIOUS.
But can anyone recommend an alternative product?

AR 2004 seems to continues the poor coverage of Europe of the previous version, Ireland, Norway and most of Eastern Europe - even Greece - are not part of Europe according to Microsoft. Sorry, but I'll stick to my copy of AR 2001 for my trips to Europe for the moment. Even the promoted improved update rate for GPS users has been available as an unofficial patch for the previous versions of the program.

I have previously brought Autoroute 2001 & 2003, believing that each year this would actually get updated with certain roads that have existed for many years. This never happened, even though the products were 2 years apart.
From another review here, a similar tale, that most of the updates appear to be related to GPS.
No good if this still doesn't reflect current roads (like M6 toll)

I have used Autoroute 98,2001 and 2002. Last year I wanted to buy the new edition 2003 but Norway was not included in the routeplanner. I expected this fact to be amended in 2004 but after contacting Microsoft support in Norway they confirmed now that Norway is still not included. Any chance of a better product i 2005? There are very good maps from Tele Atlas and the Norwegian Road Directorate why not using them.

I wish I had seen the review written by the customer from Northern Ireland before buying this product. Sorry to say that this version falls well below my expectation levels for the Irish Republic with little detail for minor roads. It may be great for the UK and other parts of Europe but as far as Ireland goes you would be better off buying a map.

I live in Ireland and having a copy of Autoroute 2001 (MS Works edition)which left out a lot of information about Ireland such as some minor roads and some ferry routes, I was looking forward to Autoroute 2004 with great expectations.
To my great delight this time there were ferry routes from Roslare to Fishguard and Pembroke. My delight soon turned to disappointment when I tried to get a route from Northern Ireland to Southern England via Roslare to Pembroke only to be given the route via Fishguard. Also from my starting point on the Mourne coast I was directed NORTH to Belfast before turning South to Newry, a detour of some 60 miles. When I tried to enter my home address as my starting point I found this time that not only were there no minor roads but now ALL but the major roads had been omited.
All I can say is it was a very poor buy!!
