5.0 out of 5 stars ww1 seen from 2011
When You see film clips from WW1 You normally see them in black&white and with a "film-speed" too quick and funny looking. Men like ants crawling up from the trenches and running across the battlefield against the german machine guns, ra-ta-ta-ta, a bit like the Keystone Cops.

In these film-clips You have living colour, the speed is right, the pictures are...

3.0 out of 5 stars Satisfactory
The First World War in Colour accomplishes all it says on the box, covering the Land Sea and Air War with no particular bells or whistles. As previous reviews suggest, the same footage is repeated several times over, and the shot of the guy carrying a wounded soldier through the trenches as he looks towards the camera is shown in every episode, sometimes two or three...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great chance to see some of the rarer WW1 pictures, 23 Jun 2009
By
This review is from: World War 1 In Colour - Complete TV Series [DVD] (DVD)
A great insight in to WW1 and works well at reminding us of the horrors of war, especially WW1. Many in here are long dead and it's important we remember. Yes ok it's not textbook stuff, but who reads textbooks any more!

Grab it it is worthwhile.

2.0 out of 5 stars A poor copy of the definitive "Great War" series of years ..., 5 Aug 2014
This review is from: World War 1 In Colour - Complete TV Series [DVD] (DVD)
A poor copy of the definitive "Great War" series of years ago, this colourisation of the dreadful conflict is a let down. Other reviewers have commented on the constantly reused clips of film, but what grated with me were the cod foreign accents used when reporting on comments made by French soldiers or German generals etc.

The extras are not bad, especially the reconstruction of the first tank-on-tank battle, but, on the whole, this is a series to be consigned to the bin or the charity shop.

It's a good overview of the WW1, the colour gives it a new life, with very nice details in operations, Air, Land and Sea.

This DVD series complements the excellent BBC series of, I think, the 1960s. Although of necessity duplicating much, this new colourised video adds some new images and all, new and old, are then marvellously enhanced. The colours are accurate for the various armies and locations but particularly they are all subtle shades which do not intrude on the subjects (as bold brilliant technicolours surely would).
I believe this is a series which could well be an example to the producers of other series of events in early times and from other countries.

I only bought this set because the free version via the Daily Telegraph was incomplete. That version had subtitles. This one didn't. My fault really I suppose. I assumed that it would be to the same spec. Amazon DON'T always make it CLEAR when they avoid the subtitles. AND THEY NEvER TELL YOU WHY.

16:9 format ? Come on, this is a typical release of elder material. Refined and wrapped in a tempting package. Fine. But what happened to the pictures area that has been cut to make it fit into the 16:9 format? Very annoying!

5.0 out of 5 stars World War 1 in Colour, 30 Sep 2010
This review is from: World War 1 In Colour - Complete TV Series [DVD] (DVD)
This would have to be the best documentary on the subject of World War 1 I have seen. The old footage in colour makes for interesting viewing and the commentary is well researched and executed. What I also like about this documentary is that each episode deals with a different subject giving the viewer an inside look at the way the war was fought. I would recommend this documentary to anyone interested in World War 1 from the start to the finish. Superb!
